    Default Evil insurance

I've been thinking about cars a bit lately

Not 17 yet, so cars never really been much of a nesesity up until now

When i am 17, i wanna get one.

I know how daft insurance is for young folk, but is it possible to get insurance on GTIs etc? i dont mean any fancy sports cars and shit like that but peugot106 or golf gtis or whatever?

you're probably all gonna laugh (and quite rightly) cos this sounds so stupidly impossible but has anybody ever heard of anyone actually getting unrediculous insurance for decent cars?

probably wont be able to afford the car or the insurance when the time comes, but i just thought i'd ask now so i can start getting excited about it

(yes i am serious and no i dont actuallyexpect to actually be able to get insurance, just asking to make sure )

    gah
    budgetinsurance.com has told me
The best price we have found is: £4493.36 (One off payment)
    Excess: £0
    Insurer: SABRE
for the peugot 106 - guess i'll just be getting a smaller engine car for a few years to build up ye olde noclaims

You'll find a lot of companies won't even give you a quote on a GTi because of your age but it's still worth phoning around.

HIC are always good to me but i'm a few years older, give them a try. You'll have to do a search on google for their number.

If you do get a decent motor whatever you do don't be tempted at saving money with just 3rd party, fire and theft. I know too many people
who've made that mistake and are still paying off a car they can't drive!

If you want a decent price for insurance, then buy a brand new car.

A few years ago, my brother (who was 19 at the time) bought a Nissan 200SX Turbo and fully comp insurance was only £1,800 through the dealer.

if i was added to my mums insurance for her car i wouldnt get any noclaims building - or would i? has this system changed atall?

i might try to get a smaller engine car then sell it and buy the decent one a few years later cos it will be miles cheaper and safer in the end

thanks for your reply Imitated, the quote above for just over 4 grand was third party with no fire/theft so it would be a heap more with it

anyway i am gonna give up the GTi idea till i am atlest 20 i think

    thanks again

You'll find that NCB doesn't make a hell of a lot of difference (but obviously good to have) when you're your age 17-22

Insurance becomes "less silly" when you're 25, when ye oldie insurance companies think most people would have grown out of the boy/girl racer in them.

First car for a 17 year old should be a old clapped out fiesta 1.2 litre at max, because no matter how great you think you are as a driver once you passed, being on the wide open road is a total different world to being in a little corsa with dual controls.

After a year get rid of it and then get something newer with same sorta size of engine.. Not gonna impress the chicks much i know, but it's got to be better than waiting for a bus :thumbs

I agree with zelnik, I know you are not gonna want to hear this but for your first car, buy a cheap low powered car. Use it for a year or two then start to upgrade to nicer higher performace cars. You can get insured on powerful cars but you are really gonna have to pay big bucks for insurance but this is not really a good idea because you will probably not have the experience to control it.
I drive a saxo vts which is virtually the same car as a 106 gti (same engine) and I am 22 and have 2ncb driving since i was 17 and i pay £786 fc plus it is modified. This is with a specialist insurer for modified cars.

Very true, I realized after passing there are so many things you don't/can't learn with your instructor and your much better off learning those sort of lessons at 10mph than 100.

There are one or two ways to get it cheaper. Somebody already mentioned doing it as a named driver, no you won't build up a no claims but I doubt the money the no claims would save you would match the savings in being a named driver (spose you could check it out first). Also if your parents own a company or anything and have employers insurance then you might be able to get it cheaper as an 'employee'. You can also do things such as pass plus which are extra driving qualifications that can get you a discount, although I think pass plus only really helps if you're not a named driver. I also have a feeling you have to have done the qualification within 2 years or it doesn't matter, not sure.
