Default IS Sly BB Really That Bad?

I've been with our telephone provider's BB for years, mainly due to a cock up that meant we had free BB for over 2 years

Sadly, all good things come to an end and two weeks ago I was informed I would have to pay or cut off, and if I simple cut off, they couldn't supply me with that number/code thingy I need to give to my next supplier to port the service, so I have to pay a whole month's fees

Also recently, my 100BaseTX network round the house has gone tits up - I can check all the wires with a multimeter, correct resistance, all 8 wires have conductivity, no shorts, yet for some reason only two cables actually work and none of the rest work, despite there theoretically being no faults.

This, and the fact that we are satellite tv subscribers makes me tempted to go for sly and get the free wireless router. My old man got it a while back, it he's been ok with it, but he's not a technie like you lot.

So basically, is Sly BB really that bad? The one thing I hope they don't do, our current supplier seems to have put some restriction on limewire, it connects to network, finds files, but either won't d/l or d/l's at painfully slow speeds, but at silly o clock at night, the downloads go well fast. As non paying customers, we couldn't even complain, but I read some providers have traffic shaping and weird stuff like that so basically would sly do the job?

I pissed around with ng's a bit, was impressed, but I never really download much so gave up.

It's more for my mum, she wants to d/l indian tunes, and her colleagues seem to be able to do so fine using that wretched s/w, and can't seem to find much indian stuff on the ng's, well actually funnillly enough cant find much using limewire either, but I guessed that may be due to whatever restriction is being put on our bb as everyone else seems to do so fine.

Sky BB is excellent, have had it for about 6 months , I am on the max package and the free netgear router sky supply syncs at 16mb and I get a constant 14.65mb 24hrs, they have never capped me .. and I am a heavy downloader ... outstanding service for the £10 per month. I am pretty close to our local exchange, and a lot depends on distance and quality of line ....

Ditto to that, except I'm on the mid package (40 gb limit per month) but to be honest, I must go over that every month without fail and have yet to be charged extra. Never had a problem and for the fiver I pay a month, it's the daddy.

Well your provider can pinch your line to restrict the speed but can't restrict what you search for and find.

I haven't used limewire since the fad of kazaa was new Can you change the default port? Providers will know this default port and restrict it.

'Fkin hell, you mean to tell me limewire's older than Kazaa :|

I used to use Kazaa Lite K++ (the no spyware version, anyone who wants a copy pm me) but that seemed to gradually turn shite, and a good mate swore by limewire, so that just became my default way of finding crap.

kazaa is a bit older m8.

NG's are something to keep checking as new files are posted all the time.

I guess if you are after something rare/obscure then any means to finding it is justified.

Just wouldn't use it for regular stuff.

I've got the shit free package....

Download is poor at under a meg, and upload is at just over 300k (according to a speed test)....

But never had any problems, except it took them a month and numerous phonecalls to move it when I moved house....!

I may move the package up, but rarely download anything.... When I do, I use utorrent, didn't realise Kazaa and Limewire were still about...

I'm on the £10 per month package, must be using around 5-10gb per day in downloads and not had a peep out of them

All going ok for me including the router that I did hear people complain about.

*Edit* Actually I did have a problem once. When I moved house it took them two months to sort it and get it back on! That was partly down to BT too though...

I have had broadband from them for around a year. I get the mid package which is £5/month for 8mb and 40gb allowance. When my sister stays over she uses Limewire to download hippydihop music and videos. I'm over the permitted allowance always every other month but I have not heard anything about it from them. Speeds always max out at 8mb as i'm pretty close to the exchange. Cant fault the service. Even customer service is good, you wont get routed to a call centre half way around the world.

Seeing as I think I'm reasonably close to exchange and reports here seem to be good, I think I will now ponder over whether to go for the £5 or £10. (Yes I know I'm tight :| )
