I have the Huxley books, "The Doors Of Perception", and "Heaven And Hell". These are definitely 'must-reads' for anyone interested in psycho-active drugs.Originally posted by broona
just read Aldous Huxley's Brave New World (for the 10th time!), best book ever written?! Trying to read more of Huxley's work, but sometimes a bit too in depth to understand.
Both books are about Huxleys experiences whilst under the influence of mescalin. He is a really good author anyway so he can express what he saw in a very detailed and poetic manner.
These books were written in in 1954 and 1956 and influenced a lot of people. Apparently "The Doors" (of Jim Morrison fame), were named after "The Doors Of Perception".
Here is a brief quote for you all to read:
A bunch of flowers shining with their own inner light. Those folds - what a labyrinth of endlessly significant complexity! I was seeing what Adam had seen on the morning of creation - the miracle, moment by moment, of naked existance.
"So right, so pure,
so hoodedclaw"
Listen buy anything by Jose Saramago the Nobel Prize winner.
Stop reading trendty shit.
A really good read im my opinion is the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen Donaldson. They're fantasy book's but i prefer em to Lord of the Rings.
Another good read is the Rats books by James Herbert. They're really good
As andyroo said earlier on, does anyone know of any links for free e-books? They've got to be worth a look.
Yeah - links would be good - As would a forum to put them into How about it?

Just finished reading "1st to Die" by James Patterson and I was blown away. I went to buy the follow-up book "2nd Chance" but it's only available in hardback until January 2003 (damn, can't wait that long - resigned to paying about £15 with postage!)
If you ever saw the film "Kiss the Girls", this bloke wrote the book.
I thoroughly recommend 1st to Die, a story about someone who kills newlyweds on their wedding night and more. The chapters are very short, gets the mind working in a movie-scene type way. Something like 120 chapters over 350-ish pages. Loads of twists and tragedies (other than the murders of course).
My usual reads are biographies and mob books (read "Murder Machine" - I totally recommend that one too!) but now I guess I'm going to go through a James Patterson phase. By the way I get a chance to read books at work, as long as everything is running alright.
No sympathy for the devil; keep that in mind. Buy the ticket, take the ride...
Sounds like you should pick up 'McCarthys Bar' by Pete McCarthy, very well written and very funny! His second book 'The Road To McCarthy' doesnt quite hit the same mark (though Im only half way through) but is definatly worth a look as well!Originally posted by CzarJunkie
Pretty much like bitchMonkey I went years without reading then about 8 years ago I picked up a book and have never looked back. I love travel books for some reason, not the Berlitz guide to fukin Glasgow type travel books but books that are factual but have been wriiten in story form about various places, at the moment I am reading 'Down Under' by probably my favorite author, Bill Bryson.
I used to read loads of books but some of them are sooo big...I mean above 400 pages. So now I just buy the Cliffnotes instead. Its great!!! You get to know all about what happened in the book without all that time consuming 'Reading' that ordinary books demand. goto http://www.cliffnotes.com for more.
Additional: I am also thinking of throwing away my TV and just reading the TV guide.
