    Default Novice, How to Overclock...

I realise this question has been asked a million times before, but I am still struggling so I thought I'd ask.
I have a P4 1.7GHz in an Abit TH7-II Raid mobo. I have tried altering the multiplier without success. My FSB is 400.
In simple steps, could someone take me through what I can alter (without resulting to physical hardware mods) to get the most from my setup and how please?

P4 1.7GHz, 512Meg RDRAM, GeForce MX400 32MB video, ABIT TH7-II RAID (not using as RAID).

    Thanks in advance...

Your CPU is locked, this means you cannot change the multiplier on it. Your only option to increase overall system speed is to increase the FSB.

btw a GFMX400 is not going to help any in that setup

I've increased my FSB from 400 to 460 and left my multyplier at 17. My P4 1.7 is now running at 1955MHz. I do not have any additional cooling, am I pushing my luck and cause my RDRAM to cook too much?

whats that then 1.73gHz? erm 13x 133 fsb right? average temp your looking at 44 - 48 deg C if you have a fairly good CPU cooler, if you have a 80mm one with a good fan ur looking at 41deg C. I guess temps with a standard AMD cooler would be around 52 deg C.

Mines 33deg C on a 2000XP when it aint clocked and when i clock to 2Ghz it goes up to the 40's and around 48 on full load after i been on games. And i dont even have a loud fan at all

I still have the AMD fan on it a the moment and its running at 57' and thats with it not really working too hard - so i need to sort some cooling out. What fan do you recommend (reasonably priced!!)

    Thanx

57 deg c :O wow, take the cover of the case and then see what the temp is. You might have some kind of air flow problem rather than the fan itself. I have many many systems at work and i always check temp in them and them AMD fans maybe cheap and not for overclocking but i know they can get way below 50 on full load with the right air flow.

Yeah it comes down to 48 with the sides off. I've just bought one of those exhaust blowers that fit into a spare slot in the back, thats got it down to 52 with the sides on. so the case is deffo the problem. Got two case fans fitted, one sucking air in and the other blowing out. looking at it I'm gonna turn them round so the one thats sucking has to do the harder work. As it is at the moment the one that blows out has a bit of a torturous path through a vent in the top of the case.

So anyway whay CPU fan should I get??

Swapped tose fans round and it's 45' with the sides on now.

Bought a Zalman CNPS6000-Cu earlier but not fitted it yet as I want to run it as it is to estabish the datum and see how the Zalman performs.

euphoria just wondering how you've got your 2000xp upto 2ghz ?

I'm running a 2000xp on a Abit Kx7-333. My Processor is still locked and it maxes out at 1.8ghz (145fsb).
Thing is have found that most xp's max out @ 1.8ghz (3 of my m8's).
My temps are 49c cpu and 33c system.

    Any help greatly appreciated.
