Default diesels and veggy oil, what cars?

Following a post from 'teach' I thought it would be a good idea for all those people with diesels who have tried veggy oil in there cars instead of diesel, to post what car they have and if they have had any problems.

Ive tried it in my megane 1.9 turbo and apart from an initial erratic idle (probably air in the pipe) it seemed to work fine.

teach's origional post I read is

running on a renault 21 td works fine apart from the smell and the engine seems to get a lot louder, and takes a few heats on of the plugs on a morning

Taking the dye out is possible I'm told, but wouldn't be worth doing seeing the dye is only for quick visual tests which are never the only tests done, so..........If you get stopped when using red, your pretty much f*cked whatever colour it is. When I say get stopped, I don't mean by the normal plodd or even the traffic plodd, I mean by the plodd in conjunction with Dept Of Transport officers with a mobile testing station, the same one's that can do a full inspection of your car or van by the side of the road and issue a prohibition order if dangerous faults are found. Don't know about any other area but I've seen only 2 prohibition orders in 20 years of driving, neither of which were issued to me. I say as long as your not driving a van, your chances of being caught as very very slim. I have to say I'd love to see what they thought when they ask what fuel your car runs on and you tell em "Fry's Crisp n Dry", or "Mazola" ;-)

    canardo or any one else,
the car runs fine, no starting probs and apart from losing slight power and od smell of chips every thing normal.
also a mate at work has tried it on his cavalier turbo diesal and he says apart from knocking at begining for about 20 seconds no other probs, sorry forgot to mention the frying smell.

    cheers

So what are you talking pricewise for a large bottle of veg oil, and how does it affect the mpg.

right lads the car been for mot and the emission was 2.12 with 50/50.
now my car never passed a emission test without putting some sort of injector cleaner in it.

that was the good news the bad news is it failed on every thing else. ha ha

i have loads of info on svo, straight vegetable oil, mixes, with diesel or parrafin. can't stop but will give all i can soon. but please please don't use straight veggie oil without magor mods. it's too viscous or thick. i'll tell you why, just hold your horses for now.

come on montsett, it's sounding a bit rough even with 50/50.
i think i need to warm it up first.
i think it's the cold weather.

well i have used veggy oil for a short while and for me i am a bit reluctant to use it for any period of time as someone else has stated the engine knocks when first started up in the morning and as far as i'm concerned this is not a good sign my car has NEVER done this before veggy oil and doesn't do it now i'm back on pure diesel so for me i think i'l stick to diesel for now

hi guys. 50/50 should be ok in this weather. mix with parrafin which has little lubrication properties. veggie oil has very good lubricity, so no worries there , even in winter to 70/30 mix to keep viscosity right. apart from imminent engine failure knoking is probably just noisy injectors due to wear. turbos are lubricated from engine oil. never buy cheap oil for diesel turdo diesels. always semi or full synthetic, esp. with veggie oil mix. emmisions at mot should be good it is not as it's a natural product. peugeots and the like have strong pumps which will take the strain for a while. but heater plug fouling and eventual piston failure due to injector clogging will come. thin it. also pump will eventualy fail. very very expensive esp. on some cars. thin it . how? heat it or cut with parrafin or diesel. legal and other implications follow. how to do and good reading on subject to follow when i can later.

I have better fish to fry.

You guys are all off your head. The car manufactures would have clocked on to this concept if it was viable.

    it is viable

there was someone in the uk trying to make veggie oil fuel a comercial product a while ago but for some reason it never came to be the chances are it's the tax that stopped him because once it's made into a fuel it's liable for the same amount of duty and considering diesel costs around 30 odd pence a litre with no tax it's probably not an economical solution
