Default Installing XP Brand New Prob

well here's one i have never come across before
our kid gave me his pc to format coz he hates windows 7, asked me to put xp back on it

anyway i boot from cd and go through the rigmarole of format using ntfs etc
NOW when it says your system will reboot in 15 seconds.

This is normal the point where it reboots and then the install carries on, BUT when it reboots i get the boot from cd message again (which is normal) but when i don't press it (which is correct) all i get is the error message saying missing operating system, and other times it says error loading operating system.

as i said ive never seen this one before EVER and ive changed the drives, the cables and even the disc

so guys does anyone have a clue why this is happening, and more the point how to fix it.

    any thoughts really appreciated

    cheers

Check the drive is recognised in the bios, and set to be 1st or 2nd bootable device after the optical drive. Test the drive sounds like a faulty drive to me and yes I have had similar problems before and it was a dieing drive.

Did you delete all partitions on the drive then create a new one as windows 7 has a totally different boot manager that will remain on there until all partitions have being deleted thus causing the missing operating system error

just checking you have done the following boot from the cd first then let it do its format and so on and copy files across then on reboot let it boot from the hard drive if not it will just go round in a loop

and is it a sata drive as for xp u will need the additional drivers if its ide then it shud be ok

yes m8 after the reboot i DONT press boot from cd, which boots from the hard drive, well thats the way ive done it for many many years anyway.

and no its not a sata, but the drive was fine before, it could be somethig to do with win7 as TotallyRandom says

seems that not deleting the partition is your 1st problem, it should let you remove it then set up another or as many as you like but if the drive is playing up then maybee you are not getting the files you need to even get that far.

i would try doing it from a memory stick, format one and set it up with windows, give it a try as there are loads of tuts on youtube.

Was going to say this also. Just let the partition software destroy the parttition and let windows Xp create a new parttition from the install cd

    just found this

    http://www.windowsreinstall.com/win7...wsxp/index.htm

looks like just the job if you don't have the Hiren’s bootable cd

Now restore the boot sector and boot.ini file (Windows XP will not boot without them)

    • Type the following commands and press ENTER after each command:

    DVD:\boot\bootsect /nt52 c:Attrib –h –s –r boot.ini.saved

    Copy boot.ini.saved boot.ini
(NOTE: the letters DVD represent our DVD drive, replace this with the drives letter, ie D: , E: , F: , G: etc etc )
    Exit
