if its the standard 512k service then you should get 64k/s download and 32k/s upload maximum, it will probably be slightly less maybe 60k and 28k. Cheap ADSL in general has a higher contencion ratio than the slightly more expensive providers so altho the downloads will be pretty good alot of the time in the peak hours you may see it drop down to a ridiculously low figure (have seen it go slower than a dialup!).
One thing to bear in mind is you can only download as fast as the source can upload, so if you are downloading of "Windows update" or something like that you will probably get maximum speed, on peer to peer tho you may only get 10k/s if thats all the bandwidth the person who is uploading has available.
Don't expect websites to always load instantly either, you will find a few of them take just as long to load on a broadband connection as they do on dialup.
Hope this helps

Got Pipex 512k (20:1 contention) here in West London.
If the source site has the available bandwidth then I always get 60KB/s downstream & 29.5KB upstream (speeds measured using a bandwidth monitor as opposed to believing what Windows tells me).
Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit the wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it
same, in south london. constant 61.3 downstream, 30k upstream

I feel i should maybe clarify my post a little. The provider i have seen is BTopenworld and i think their contension ratio is 50:1 (somebody must know for sure) and i have seen that when opening sites at peak times they have been stupidly slow. i occationally have this with my 1mbit blueyonder connection but i guess thats because of the transparent cache.
I probably mistakenly tarred Pipex with the same brush as they are a cheap provider. but if you guys think they are good then who am i to say any different. I have never actually used a Pipex connection.
