Default 5 Speed or 6 Speed Focus?

My car was written off in December and the third party has finally paid out. I am looking to get a Focus Facelift 05 onwards 1.8 or 2.0 TDCI. I drove a 1.8 5 speed as my courtesy car which I really liked but I have found a company selling the 1.8 5 speed and the 2.0 6 speed for the same price, same milage, both full service history and warranty.

So I was wondering (having never driven a 6 speed) if anyone knows if the Focus 6 speed 2.0TCDI is any good? I looked up on google about the advantages and apparently 6 gears are not always better, it depends how the manufacturer implements them (Source).

The only advantage to me is the 1.8 is insurance group 6 and the 2.0 is group 9, but obviously there is more power in the 2 litre (1.8 is 113bhp, 2 is 135bhp) and my last car was group 9 so no problems there.

    Cheers

All you got to do is get the cdti remapped and you''ll forget about the 1.8 (seriously)

The torque along on any turbo diesel engine kills the petrol equivalent along with the mpg

    I think they're both diesels.

My previous Seat Ibiza TDI had a six-speed gearbox, and my most recent VW Passat TDI doesen't. Both 1.9 TDI's with 130HP.

If I had the choice, I'd have liked the 6-Speed ... at 70MPH on the motorway in the Seat the car would be doing under 2,000RPM but in the VW it's about that. The difference in the cars makes little difference to the noise though, the Seat was a lot nosier than the VW, but got better MPG - that could be down to being smaller as well as having the 6-Speed box.

If it was the same price, and little difference in the insurance I'd go for the 2.0 TDCI 6-Speed.

I've had 6 speeders in a load of Fords - wouldnt look back and sure the MPG should be better with a 6 speeder too.

Another vote for the six speed 2.0 TDCi,for the same money I would'nt go for the 1.8.

May sounds patronising, but drive them both and see which one you prefer?

Not always possible with the places I am going to get a car mate (auctions etc), also I was hoping to have some advantages pointed out as I may not get a good mix of driving in the test drive (motorway, city and country roads).

And yes they are both Diesels

Thanks for all input, I will call the insurance company today to see what the difference in premium will be.

Find someone who rents the 6 speed, and take it out for a day or 2 and give it some thrashing.

id have the 6 speed over 5 any day, remapped it will give great performance and economy, depends on your age but 2.0 and 1.8 shouldnt be much in it insurance wise.
Only in Britain….do we use the word “politics” to describe the process of Government. “Poli” in Latin meaning “many” and “tics” meaning “bloodsucking
    creatures”

About £200 in the insurance, 1.8 is £700ish, 2.0 is £900ish. The two cars I was looking at have sold so I am looking at another 2.0 that is supposed to sell tonight but if it doesn't I will try get my hands on it. Failing that I have found another 1.8 which I will get if the 2.0 has gone.

    Cheers for all replies
