How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3G on OS 3.1.2 Using RedSn0w (Windows)

This tutorial can be used to jailbreak before applying the BlackSn0w unlock to your device.

Step One
Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage

Download RedSn0w from here and place it in the Pwnage folder.
Likewise, download the latest 3.1.2 firmware
from below and place it in the same folder.

3.1.2 (3G): iPhone1,2_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw

Extract the RedSn0w application from the RedSn0w zip file to the Pwnage folder.

Step Two
Connect your iPhone to the computer and launch iTunes.

Select your iPhone from the list of devices on the left.
Now hold down shift and click the Restore button.
Restore is preferred as it won't create any wasted space on your iPhone.

Navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop and select the firmware ipsw.
Click the Open button to continue.

Step Three
Once iTunes has finished updating your iPhone to the desired firmware
you may launch redsn0w.exe from the Pwnage folder on your desktop.

Step Four
Once RedSn0w opens click the Browse button

Step Five
Select the firmware ipsw we placed in the Pwnage folder
on our desktop then click Open

Step Six
Once the firmware has been verified click the Next button to continue.

Step Seven
From this window you can select the jailbreak options you would like.
If you have already pwned your device check the Already pwned option.

Verbose boot displays detailed information on boot of your device
and is generally only needed by developers and advanced users.

Make sure Cydia is selected. For this tutorial
we will also select Custom boot logo and Custom recovery logo.

When you click to select each custom logo option a dialog window
will appear asking you to select the image. Locate the image
you would like to use then press the Open button.

*Remember the rules for boot logos are: RGB or Grayscale format
with Alpha channel and dimension below 320x480.
Click the Next button to continue

Step Eight
Please plug your iPhone into the computer and make sure
its OFF then click the Next button

Step Nine
RedSn0w will now guide you through the steps to get into DFU mode.

Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.

Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button
until RedSn0w detects the device.

Step Ten
Your iPhone will now reboot

Step Eleven
RedSn0w will then begin uploading the new RAM Disk and Kernel.

Step Twelve
Once this is complete you will be notified that RedSn0w is done.
Click the Finish button. After your iPhone finishes rebooting
(5 minutes or so), it will be jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard.

Hey kracken just tryed to install the ispw and it said could not be restored unknown error occurred (1015) Is that because my 3G is on ispw 3.1.3. Cheers boss

I have a iphone 3g current firmware 3.1.3 (7E18) can I use the above to jailbreak mine?

Also is it easy to do as I have the technical abilitly of a elephant wearing mittens trying to wire a plug.

I thought I'd try this instead of Blackra1n on a 3G just to see the benefits/drawbacks. I have used redsn0w in the past to do my old iTouch. It seems to have got stuck on 'Uploading Device Tree'. It has 2 blue bars completed but has sat here for the past 10 mins with the iPhone showing the HDD logo and 'Downloading Jailbreak Data...'.

Is this normal? If I eject the iPhone will it be recoverable? I need it within the next half hour when I go out really!

EDIT: I pressed cancel on Redsn0w and rebooted the iphone, thankfully it's working fine. I think I will stick to blackra1n as it is faster.

1 hour gone & still stuck on step 1.

The link appears to be broken for RedSn0w.

Might be a daft question, but when I download the 3.1.2 firmware do I save or open the file as I have done both & my Pwned file does not look like the one in step 1 I have about 7 folders appear.

If you have a iPhone 3G on 3.1.2 have you tried Blackra1n? Takes about 15 seconds and you can turn the phone on and off without tethered jailbreak. AFAIK all 3G had the same bootrom, just the 3G S had a few old bootroms then a new one which forces tethered jailbreak.

Can't remember how I did it but my 3G S is on 3.1.3 jailbroken and I can turn it on and off without tethered jailbreak. Must be the old bootrom.
