A lightweight French car with a diesel (turbo?) engine. In the past I have ran:
Pug 205 Diesel, and Turbo Diesel.
Pug 106 Diesel.
Citroen ZX Turbo Diesel.
Pug 306 Turbo Diesel.
These have been by far been the best cars I have had for reliability and cheap insurance, and if your that way inclinded, you can run them on 'alternative fuel'
£2000 should get you a decent 4 door 306 Turbo Diesel, I'd go for something like that.

personally i would go for a ford, very cheap bits, most garages can work on them if you cant yourself and loads of "add ons" for them if you wanna spruce it up a bit
.
Thanks guys....
Any suggestions as to where the best place is too look for cars as at present my only source is autotrader. And getting a decent pug 306DT for £2000 out of there doesn't seem to likely. I am in Shropshire so there arn't a great deal of local gargaes/private sellers.
Many Thanks
alright m8
What about a Golf 1.3, 1.4 or something Mk2/MK3
Good car, reliable and cheap to run with all the options for further improvement!!!
Cant go wrong
Up north we have what have 'the yellow paper'. I think it's 'Ad-Mag'???. The Autotrader is generally for higher priced cars, I think its about £30 to advertise so most people wont spend that on there rot-box's.
As Norad said, Golf's are quite good for what you get. I've had a Mk2 1.4 and they seem alright. My mate also had a polo which was nice for what it was.
I would stick to pug / citroen diesels or VW if you dont want to spend as much running the car as buying it. Believe me I have been there.

If you know a little about cars, or have a friend who does, why not try your local auctions.
Just got a Pug106 diesel on am M plate for £800 and an Astra 1.7 TD on an M for £1100.

If it's described as foolproof, you can bet they are about to breed a better fool.
