    Default Hardrives

    Hi

Im looking at buying a couple of new harddrives and was wondering if any of u lot could tell me if they are any good or not!

The first is a Maxtor 740X 40GB which i want for a second HD in my machine!

The second is a ExcelStor/Connor 30GB ES3230! this is to go in a machine i gotta build for my mum!

Why im asking could someone just explain the difference between an ata100 cable and an ata133 one?!?! (Altho my m/board only supports ata100 )

    Any info much appreciated

    ata100 is slower than the 133, but if u have a 133 it'll run on a 100 but at 100 speed.
Check if ur motherboard supports Ata 133 first. its backwards compatable as far as i know.

ata 133 is pointless as it is only a theoretical speed. in some ways ata 100 is also. Cables are the same.

But the maxtors 740X are good drives... but can be a little noisy. on the budget level, the Seagate Bar VI's are quite good... if you want the best of the best... you should go for the WD Special Ed drives with 8mb cache.

Make sure you don't hook the Hard Drives up on the same IDE channel as your CD Drive as the CD-Drive will pull down the speed of the H.D.D

i'll put the HD's as master and slave on primary and dvd and CD writer on the second channel then!

Thought u were meant to keep the 2 drives on seperate channels tho so u can copy disk2disk on the fly

I recently installed a Maxtor 40Gb in my PC and found that the MB/BIOS did not accept large drives.
Then got a ATA100 controller card from ebuyer and that did the trick. Gives you lots of IDE slots for any other drives too.

Just in case you run across the same prob mate.
