    Help HDD screwed

I've got a nas set up with 2 1tb samsung spinpoint f1's in there set up as raid span

i couldn't access any data on them tonight from my popcorn hour also from the pc

so i took the hdd's out of the nas drive and connected them to my pc but one of them has started making a clicking noise just as it boots up fucking thing is only about 8 months old

Normally i wouldn't be too bothered but one of the hdd's has got all of my camcorder movied on it of the kids growing up

CAn anyone recommend somewhere i could send the hdd's to get this data backed up or tell me a way i can browse the working hdd to access the files

they are formatted as ext3 drives i've managed to get it show up in windows but it just tells me that i need to format it to get it going

the various folders on it like
    video
    cam
    photos
    music
were all created by doing user accounts on my icybox

If it's formatted as ext3 Windows wouldn't be able to read it directly anyway mate without messing about with drivers.

Have you tried just booting your computer off a Linux bootCD that you can get off the net as that may be able to access it?

Something like the Knoppix boot disk should do you mate?

Just phoned the man at www.retrodata.co.uk and he says that he could help me but it's gonna cost £750 - £1200 to recover the data

Just dont have that sought of cash lying around at the mo as getting married at the end of the month

However i have just swapped over the pcb's from both drives and the original clicking drive is now fine and the good drive is now clicking so it can only be the pcb board

Now just need to try and find a replacement or maybe buy another f1 drive and swap board over so that i can then recover my data hopefully

When you say "Raid Span", do you mean RAID 0 or RAID 1?

If the former, you're fucked as the data would have been split 50/50 across both drives.
As far as changing the logic board goes, you will need one from an identical drive with an identical firmware (although that won't help if the drive is clicking because of physical damage).
Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit the wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it

To be honest i'm not sure what raid level it is my icybox just tells me it's raid span

as for the physical damge i've ruled that otu already as i've swapped both boards over and the fault has also swapped over to the other drive

Reading up on this it seems as if samsung's firmware is not as good as it could have been also seen that the pcb's are very prone to bad power supply's

Wife has just told me that our daughter was flicking the power off and on for a while on the nas drive
so can only guess that is what's fucked it

Did your box have 1TB or 2TB of disk space?

If the latter, it was running RAID 0 which means you will need both drives up & running in order to recover the data, and they will have to be connected to the controller that initially set up the array.

Once you get the drives back,I would suggest you do not use them again with the icy box as it has well documented issues with samsung drives
    Good luck
