I've got a couple of ps3's and a computer connected wirelessly to my router at 54mb/s , sometimes the ps3's have problems when online so I'm assuming the wirelss system is too congested , I can't run cables round the house so I thought about getting homeplugs , I was going to get one to plug into my router , one to plug into 1 ps3 and a 4 port one for the computer and other ps3 , now would I be wasting my money or would the homeplugs make a difference , I was looking at the 85mbps because of the price or would I defo need 200mbps .

Also because of this I'd then need a switch behind my router for the extra port. Am i asking to much from a normal bog standard £40 router ?

Homeplugs are definitely the way to go as long as the wiring in your house is good, I'd also recommend you don't run them through extension leads if you can try and plug them directly into the wall socket. I have them running all over my house, so much easier than cables everywhere and they're rock solid I've had the current set for over 3 years and they're still going strong.

The problem with wireless is it's a shared resource and you never get the full potential from it because of all the overheads and interference, only really useful IMHO for iphones and the odd laptop if you can't get it near a network socket.

If you can afford the difference definitely go for the 200MB homeplugs I started out with the 85MB ones and found them lacking if you're transferring large files or streaming video regularly.

I use 2 sets of the 200mbps Comtrend 902s that come free with bt vison. They usually go for around £40 on ebay and worth every penny. Wireless range is shite from my router so the Comtrends do nicely for the rooms I usually get a crap signal in, which is all rooms except the one the router is in lol.

Just noticed this part of your post. why would you need a switch behind the router for an extra port? If you plug the router into a homeplug it's on the network, assigning addresses and doing everything else it does for anything else plugged into a homeplug on your internal house wiring. No need for a switch unless you want something else plugged directly into the router for some reason?

all four sockets are took up in the back of the router so need the switch for the homeplug , mostly will only be playing games on ps3's ... its only a tenner for a switch but its something else that switched on all the time !!

I was looking at one of these Linksys PLTS200-UK , and quite a bit cheaper than netgear ... any reason why ? I can't find a 200mb with more than 1 port and money does have to come in to it as its only for the kids bedrooms.

as for the extension leads I'll try and work round them .... can you monitor the speed so I could see the difference with / without extension leads ?

I use belkin homeplugs 200mb from pc world but I can't seem to find them only the 1gb version for £95 if your using them to stream media then you want faster than 85mb if your just playing games then 85 is fine. Never had a problem with them but remember to take the plug speed with a pinch of salt. For example 85mbps will probably not reach 85mbps.

Is there a way of reducing homeplug latency?

Ive tweaked the prescale on my plugs for higher throughput and a more stable connection through my surge protectors but it still adds like 4ms to my pings...

Granted 16ms isnt anything to sniff at but lowers better

Homeplugs. You can plug Hubs into them at the other end which means you can have many devices in each room.

Got 3 BT vision Boxes, the Xbox, my Hisense Media Box, Home Server etc.....

The wireless is just used for the laptops/iPhones

I found that homeplugs were shite in my house and it is worth remembering that they are reliant on you having reasonable wiring. I dropped some cable from the loft on the outside of the house and brought it back in and bob on. No mess and no reliance on the electrics in my house.

got homeplugs here, 200mbps comtrend ones.had them few yrs. they used to work great but something on my mains network is causing signal to drop so no more streaming HD smooth for me. they generally are better than wireless but as stated speed reliant on how clean your mains is. for instance noisy switch mode supplies in most household items ! Like routers ironically

Just my 2p's worth, it has to be homeplugs all the way, im running some Devolo's and have been for years. I run my PS3, stream HD stuff and the usuall web surfing. Just one thing to note is that I got into this by having a cheap pair given to me which were ok at best. Go for a brand name like Devolo or something else like the Neatgear ones and I promise you wont look back
