Default Sleeping Tablets - Are they any use?

I've never had sleeping tablets, sometimes I have trouble sleeping because of the hours I keep, sometimes I be up until 3 and don't have to be until 12 or sometimes have to be up at 7.00 but can't sleep until 3.

Do sleeping tablets work? over the counter ones I would be after.
Do they put you out v quick?
Do you be tired the next day?
Do they give you a better sleep?

In my last job I used to work nights and trying to sleep at the weekend was a right pain in the arse. I tried everything you could buy over the counter they never worked Nytol etc etc. The only thing that really put to sleep was a big fat spliff.

I've tried Nytol Herbal and they "seem" to do something to aid me sleep, although that could just be placebo. From my own experience though I'd say that over the counter sleeping remedies are generally a waste of time.

If you want something that really works then ask your GP if you can try Temazepam.

Same as that I have tried loads of stuff over the years and the only ones that have properly worked for me have been temazzies - my doctor won't give them to me any more though as they are habit forming if used constantly for 2-4 weeks

As above i usually resort to a fat one before bed now, seems to work ok

i would say the chances of over the counter ones working depend on your bodies tolerance to the active compound. They are worth a try though.

IMHO the best sleepers you can get from your Dr, if you end up going down that route, is zopiclone usually very quick acting, very little after effects in the morning, infact the most widely reported one is just a metallic taste in the mouth, and harder to become addicted/tolerant to than benzos (temazepam). though your Dr still wont want you on it for more than a couple of weeks.

try amitriptaline, its a antidepressant but it has other uses off lable, and at the time it worked for me and unlike some of the stronger ones as far as I know its not habit forming,

I used to take 200mg on a night and it took about 30-45 mins to work, I started off on 10mg a night but you build up a tolerance over time, in the end I was taking 200mg and it didnt touch which is why I changed my prescription to a more herbal brand

It had pretty much the same side effects as getting stonned, dry mouth, bloodshot eyes, a feeling of being a bit mong'd etc. just like weed theres no real side effects the morning after, or at least there wasnt for me

I am lucky that i dont have problems sleeping even though i work shifts.

A colleague who does swears by Night Nurse though. i dont know why he takes this as it appears its more for flu/colds but he swears by it.

Phenergan. You can buy it in Boots (over the counter, not on the shelves).

It will knock you out for 8 hours.....but will make you drowsy the next day. Good stuff

Some of the replies are good. I don't think i'd want to be taking a dose of painkillers each night, but maybe would be good if on certain occasions I know I have to be up and well slept.
It definately isnt as serious as to need to go to the Doctor, and wouldn't want to be on any of that stuff.
I usually be tired during the day and wide awake come 11p.m. but thats just because of my habits.

I went to the docs and said I had problems sleeping a while back. He gave me some sleeping tabs that he said only take when I am really tired and cant sleep. They do seem to work. i have had the perscription for well over 6 months and just having them helps me sleep (if you know what i mean). I have also never suffered from any side affects.

Another vote for a big joint from me. It's done the job fairly well for me for over ten years. Only problem is I've been watning to give up for ages, and it may leave you feeling a little groggy when you do get up.

I did try a few diazepam when younger, was blinding, I could take one and knock out at any time, and would wake up feeling fine.

Sorry to bump this thread, but i've been having major sleeping problems for the past few weeks, always been a bit of an insomniac and/or poor at getting a good nights deep-sleep, but it's been very bad recently. Barely getting enough sleep, not sure what it is, i think most likely a mix of stress, allergies, and god knows what.

Is Phenergan definitely available over the counter, cause if i enter it into boots online is says it's only available via prescription, although they sell it on chemistsdirect, but postage is steep. Any idea how much they charge in boots and if it is definitely OTC?

Nytol 1-a-day does absolutely nothing for me. I've tried the herbal method using melatonin, still nothing. I rarely go to the doctors, i imagine if i make an appointment it'll take them over a week before they can see me, and even then who knows what they'll give me if anything at all.

200mg is an outrageous dosage ! I'm amazed a doctor would prescribe you that much.
