    Polishing ya car

theres not been a thread about this yet, so thought id be the 1st one to ask

what polish do u use on ya car? i wanna get a show room shine

ive beeen recommended to use AutoGlym resin polish followed by the Autoglym high gloss stuff.

any other alternatives that wont hurt my bank balance too much?

also how do i get rid of the little swirl scratch mark type things on my bonnet (i have metallic paint), will the resin stuff take this off?

Useful links ive found on my search for show room shine:
    http://www.autoglym.co.uk/index2.html
    http://www.meguiars.co.uk/
    http://www.sportscarworld.ltd.uk/
    http://www.carcareonline.com/howto_articles.html

    cheers

    Default car valeting

I've tried many products over the years and here's my take on things.

car waxing technology has moved on quite a bit in the 3 years since i got my car.

3 years ago i would have said use a good Carnuba based wax and only use the softest terry cloths to clean / dry your car.

Try to use a proper car shampoo, otherwise you'll just be stripping off the wax you spent so long putting on previously.

I used to use meguiars products and they are very very good.

but now its all about polymers.
I've switched to a product called FinishFirst cos i saw loads of ferrari owners raving about it. Its from the states and bloody incredible. Far better than a carnuba based wax.

I noticed your link re. Zymol. A lot of folks swear by this product. It is expensive. Do not confuse it with the cheap version that halfords sell.

As for polishing now there's no substitute for Microfibre cloths.
Far gentler than the softest terry towel.

the swirl marks really require a specialist / gentle polishing compound. I'd recommend meguiars No 7 or 3M imperial hand glaze. I'm assuming the swirl mark is only affecting the clear coat

For cleaning your glass, there's nothing like Eagle 1 20/20 glass cleaner.

For Tyre Dressing i'd recommend Tyre Slik, nothing comes close to it in terms of durability and quality.

BTW most people comment my car still looks like its only just rolled off the production line!

I always swore by Autoglym or Mer, which is the same kind of stuff and equally as good, till I was given a freebie of another polish to try and I'd never use anything else now. Same application as the other 2 but MUCH better results PLUS the real good thing is the fact that it can be applied onto the car before it's properly dry after washing it. That's the bit I like because it's a pain in the ass when your polishing a panel and water drips out from behind a trim and turns the polish your applying (Autoglym etc) to emulsified crap that has to be dried off and done again. I used the clear Autoglym stuff that's supposed to protect, enhance make the shine last longer but I can't say I was ever convinced it made any difference. I'll post the name of the polish later on cos right now it escapes me, something to do with the fact I've not used it for a long time I dare say! ADDED LATER>>> "Auto Finish" is the name of the polish :thumbs <<<<

i dont stop polishing my car, but ive been bad lately and aint polished it for about 1month :-(

I use to use Mer but im using the Autoglym Super Resin polish!! its very good!! put it on with a nice soft lint free cloth and i take it all off with my polisher(Cheater!!) Hey my friends say i got more wax on my car than a candle factory hehe!!

as the previous matey said (sorry i forget his name) the polish he mentioned is expensive but it depends on how much u love ur car and how often u want to wax it!

Also try to use as he mentioned a PH Balanced shampoo as others will strip the wax off

    Cheers

Autoglym is a silicon based polish, so where does the wax come into it?

Tried scrolling down? You might actually see the post your replying to and not have to call members "matey" cos it's all there at a glance.

Now your takin the p!ss, right? we're still talking about a car here, yes? not your girlfriends hair?? PH balanced huh? :rolls: what wax? Did you not just say you used Autoglym?

Anyway.............. back to the topic? The polish I mentioned is called "Auto Finish" and is made by "Car Plan" , I don't recal how much it was but I don't think it was expensive and it lasts for ages. Like I said, it's damn good and well worth a try, expecially if your as impatient as me and hate waiting till the car is perfectly dry. Look for a black plastic rectangular (including the lid) "bottle" about 8" high. It says something about being the factory polish for TVR on it if I remember right.

sorry hybrid but it was like 2 in the morning and was hard to remember what the name was!!!

For the ph balanced shampoo this is no bull!! i was reading an article in max power or fast car and they were chatting about it there!!! they also mentioned that actually rubbing on the polish in circles is bad and to actually put it on in a foward backward motion

another thing is i use autoglym but use a wax also!!

Now there isnt no need to be so bad just cause i forgot the guys name!!so sorry for that and no hard feelings as it was late afterall

    Thanks

WOOOAH!!! Calm doon chappie! All in good fun, keeps the forum alive.

You DO need to get a new read though, max power sux! It's a titty and tit mag.

Your right about one thing though, you ARE supposed to polish in backwards and forwards motions, but............... I doubt anyone on here incliding me AND you would notice one jot of a difference. Besides........... Your polisher just can't do it! :-)

i used to spray cars for a living and the final finish to showroom standards takes as much skill as anything and requires plenty of hard work. first with yellow dusters folded into a rough ball shape with no lumps under the surface; use fine abrasive type polish, a little at a time in a small area. keep working beyond the first rubbing until you burnish the surface to a deep reflective gloss. this will take time. do a panel at a time and finish off with a good silicone or acrilyc wax.swirls will dissapear and you'll be able to see your face in it . hard work but very satisfying. will add value to your pride and joy too,

I use turtle wax - gives my car a really good shine!

first off i wash it with normal car washing stuff, then i rinse it off with purifyed water (99.9% clear water) which greatly reduces any water marks. then i use all turtle products. i use the turtle wax metallic polish, turtle wax glass polish, turtle tyre gel.
Takes me a good few hours to get it gleamin, but the car looks soo much better!
oh yeh, i'd recommend 'Back to black' for use on bumpers, it really looks good, the black plastic goes back to it's original black colour which gives a nice look.

well i paid a visit to halfords 2day, bought some MER polish, as u can use it when the car is wet and in direct sunlight, so thought id give it a go.

u just polish it in, and it goes into a dry haze, leave it on for how ever long and then buffer it off, quite easy i might add to

results was pretty cool, car is gleaming after one coating of it, i hear MER has a t-cut type of abrasive in it, so im a bit dubious of using it again to build the protective coating.

one question, can i use the AutoGlym High Gloss polish stuff after ive used the MER polish?

i will probably try the auto glym resin polish next to see how that compares, just the drying the car is a hassle!

Hybrid, i couldnt find the "Auto Finish" at halfords, or i would have given that ago, does it have any abrasives in it?

I'd never heard of Mer products until i saw them on QVC one time. Do you guys use a power washer? i recommend that you do cos the pressure from the water is great for giving the car a good once over clean, especially good for cleaning wheels!
