Could i test the hard drive on my desktop pc? I know dells have their own psu's and stuff like that

you should be able to test the hard drive on the same pc.
just get hirens boot cd or some other one that has hdd testing.
you may have to change the bios setting to boot from cd, or you might get a one time boot option to select cd.
People who use the phrase "Touch base" should be shot.

Test the hard drive > F12 > Hard Drive Diagnostics
If they pass
Boot system too XP CD
R For repair
Type in FIXMBR then test
Fixboot then test
Chkdsk /r then test
they should fix that issue if the drive is not knacker that is
