playing dvds

a lass i know has asked me 2 av a look at her laptop 4 her, i av a basic knowledge ov pcs so im not 2 familiar with the workins ov laptops.

neway the problem she told me she had was that it wouldnt play dvds, now she swears blind she was told itd play dvds and it even has power dvd installed but it wont play ne dvds that i av(original). now when i looked at the front ov the drive it says compact disc but does not say nething about it beeing a dvd drive.

also when i look in the device manager it gives the following info which 2 me means it dont play dvds.....

ne1 no if im missing sumthin ere as 2 y it ownt play dvds or is it just simply a cd-rom therefore not capable?

also would it b possible 2 play films off cd in a divx format 4 xample?

When you insert a DVD does it just spin a couple of times and then just spit it back out?

If you goto "My Computer", right click on the drive and select "Properties"; now click on the "Settings" tab and it should tell you the name of the drive an model, etc.

Also if you go in to "Device Manager" again, and goto the drives properties (where you got you previous infomation from), if it is a DVD drive it should have a tab saying "DVD Region".

I may be wrong but thats what it says for my DVD-RW.
