Just ordered one.....no idea why, I have absolutely no need for one, but I can't resist a bargain.
After a bit of a battle, I have managed to get my Three sim working on this, and im getting reasonable speeds...will do me nicely on my netbook when im in Scotland in a few weeks.
I think they come unlocked anyway.
The last batch were repackaged returns and came unlocked.
If not you can use the Huawei Unlock Utility that I posted here last week.
don`t mean to sound dumb but can you just put your own sim in these and away you go? i`ve got unlimited internet access on my 02 contract but dont use it on my phone but wouldn`t mind using the laptop when i`m working away from home

Will be against your 02 contract t and C's unless you specifically pay for it. So they could hassle you if you smash it, otherwise they probably wont notice and it should work I believe

I got one of these (E160) last time they were half price. I didn't get on with the software that comes with it so got hold of an app called mobile partner. It detected a 3 sim fine.
"An evil exists that threatens every man, woman, and child of this great nation. We must take steps to ensure our domestic security and protect our homeland." - Adolf Hitler, 1933
Mine arrived locked, it immediately told me that when I put in my 3 sim, told me something about 3 attempts to enter the unlock code.
I then ran the aforementioned unlock utility and code generator and successfuly unlocked it, but then, whilst it recognised my 3 sim, and in fact received a couple of text messages on my PC (which I didnt expect to happen), would not allow me to get any internet data whatsoever.
I ended up flashing the device with firmware and software I obtained from the Three Australia site, after which it then prompted me to install the 3 software on sticking it in, rather then the o2 software. Installed that, then it worked perfectly for me.
When you unlock them for another network you have to configure the correct APN to match the SIM your using.
For example:-

Cheers for the link carpman, going to grab one of these.
I notice a lot of people are using these with the 3 network... Why's that then and should I be getting a 3sim?
I'm a noob and have only now got a need to get one, I would just like to be able to leave it in a draw with credit on and use it whenever I need to.
Cheers,
dEVS!

Quality post JonEP. I have copied it and stuck it in the Mobile Phone Handsets & Device Discussion forum too.
Good info.

does anyone have a link for the e160 mobile partner software please?
I got one last time and managed to get my mitts on an iphone pay and go "unregistered" sim, plugged it in and away we go...
Sorted.
So i can simply put my sim from my palm pre into this? I have unlimited data/internet so if i simply use the dongle to casually browse the internet i wont get charged anythign extra and it will just be classed as browsing on my pre?
