Default Sky to release new viewing cards

On page 51 of this months Sky magazine it says Sky will be releasing new cards for all subscribers. The new cards have updated software.

Does this mean that the old cards will be switched off ?

Interesting question 4me2, it is probably logical to suppose that those will be replaced as well and that all old style cards will be switched off after a suitable period of grace.

This will I'm sure present major problems for a vast amount of overseas viewers, as I'm sure that many bought boxes with FTV cards, having no knowledge of where the original registered address was, or subscription cards from sources that no longer exsist.

Another issue that was brought up on another forum, is what about the off subscription Sky cards? Many people are using these as FTV cards, will Sky replace these, or perhaps leave them to get BBC cards?

Not being of the ilk that had analogue Sky, I was wondering if they did this at all with that service?

Is this because thay have discovered that someone is getting close to cracking thier system, or is this just similar to moving up from SECA1 to SECA2 which needed the new cards?

Or are they just so loaded that they want a new look on their cards ?!!!!!!!!

Could be any of those, although they are not, I believe changing encryption, they may be fine tuning it. They may also be providing higher peformance cards to counter some of the problems with older boxes and the newer software. This may also be a pre-emptive move against any potential hardware or early stage software hacks.

They changed cards very regularly with the analogue service, which in the end was hacked, but of course they only had a million or so then.

my guess is that the cards cant store enough info for all the interactive stuff and future feaures that will be released.

Can the old cards be reprogrammed and used for something else?

I don't believe so Aldo. Try reading the old one in your programmer when you receive your new one, it won't recognise it.
