Apple Moves to Ban Protective Screen Film from Its Stores

Apple is banning protective screen films from its retail and online stores, several vendors have confirmed to iLounge, which focuses on Apple’s iPhone, iPods and their respective add-ons. The site claims Apple’s move will go into effect this May, while vendors remain baffled at Apple’s decision.

Citing ongoing communications with vendors, iLounge particularly mentions that one company has been told that Apple “will remove both film-only solutions from its stores, as well as any case or other accessory that includes film protection as part of its package, such as cases that include film screen protectors.”

The report, picked up by multiple Apple-focused publications, continues to quote other sources as saying that, “The ban will impact all forms of screen film, including completely clear film, anti-glare film, and mirrored film, regardless of whether the purpose of the film is protective, decorative, or both.” Sales of films for iPods, iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers will also be halted.

One vendor in particular is said to have speculated that, “The ban is an Apple marketing attempt to suggest screen durability, despite scratches that have damaged both plastic and glass displays of its products for years.” It is also believed that manufacturers of accessories that also include protective films may actually not create separate versions of the products, in order to appease Apple, in which case customers would be the main beneficiaries.

Requesting details on the change from a leading film developer, iLounge did not get a comment. Several other case makers were also mum, even though they had been aware of the new policy. Only one manufacturer, XGear (Mirage Mirror Screen Protector vendor), reportedly suggested that, “Despite the Apple Store ban, its ‘marketing positioning will not change. This will open many new doors for us as we move forward in my opinion.’”

Stupid idea. Every Apple device I've ever owned (iPods and phone) have been prone to scratches and always have a film protector fitted.

My 3GS screen isn't scratched and I keep it in my pocket with change, keys etc. But the rear scratches VERY easily so seems stupid for Apple to remove such products. I had a Zagg full body on my phone til it pissed me off so much I removed it. Did it's job as far as scratches were concerned though.

I spoke to my apple-store-genius mate and their opinion is that a)they're fed up with being asked to fit them and b) the glass is optical glass and hard to scratch anyway.

personally I wouldnt be without a protector.

My original 3G had two scratches on the screen after about 6 months of use, probably from me having my keys in the same pocket. I learned from that mistake and my 3GS has had a screen protector since day 1.

Yer, I've had a plastic rear cover on since 1 month after purchase and a film cover from ebay on for about 6 months and it looks like brand new when i take them off, has saved me so many times from dropping it and throwing it about etc.

I've never had a screen protector on any of my phones and I've also never had a scratch on the screen of any of my phones.

That said, Apple are being cocks over this one.

i have screen protectors on all my touch screen devices and some non touch screen, the ds, psp, phone, ipod classic, and good knows what else and let me tell you i would not be without 1. i find using styluses and sometimes even the nails can scratch the screen all i can say is its another reason to buy from anyone but apple for their accessories.

Personally its probally its because they dont like a third party getting a pound every year or so for every screen protector, plus theres the whole second hand market, if the screen is looking worse for wear then the amount you get on ebay wont be as much as if it looks good.
may the worse thing you do today be the best thing you do tomorrow

maybe theyre doing it because the new iphone wont need them, i remember seeing something called "gorilla glass" that was shown off at CES earlier this year. if they use this it'd save them money on repairs, especially if the screen was alot more durable. I personally think if they did do this it would probably negate the need for a screen protector
