Default New games (ie. NSMBW) on 3.1E with D2C

    Hey guys,

I've been away a few monthgs travelling Asia and have got back to family telling me the Wii won't play new games...

It has a D2C chip, and is on firmware 3.1E, never had any probs with running games after putting them through BrickBlocker..but I'm told New Super Mario Bros won't boot, I told them never to do an update so that's as far as they got.

I have read it has new protection, but couldnt find any info on running this game with the new D2C chip, so was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction or to the correct thread (search 'd2c' came up with nothing)

Is it going to involve using a HDD/USB Caddy thing which I've seen you can now do, some newer softmod method, or is there an easier way with the D2C?

Thanks in advance to any help.

    Hi rIKmAN,

'D2C' is a drive chipset that the wii uses, D3-2 being the most recent.
I take it that you have a modchip fitted for the 'D2C' chipset - Maybe a D2C Key? If you know what modchip you have fitted then you could check the manufacturers website for the latest update, which may well cover NSMB

However some of the earlier modchips are to be honest obsolete, with the arrival of USB HDD Loader & the 3.1 Firmware is alittle dated to say the least (regards hardware support & performance).

A 320GB USB HDD can hold in excess of 120 games for as little as £40 - So well worth looking into. Sticky above is always a good place to start.

    Regards

    Hi mate,

    Thanks for the quick reply

Sorry, maybe my post was misleading....it *is* chipped with a D2C chip already, which has been fine until my return and the "new breed" of games with protection...

I have checked for fw updates for the D2C chip itself, but found nothing relevant.

Would I be able to use the HDLoader method with a D2C fitted to the machine already?

Thanks again for the quick response

PS. Just reading your SoftMod guide, overwhelming, so just asking questions to confirm so I don't end up with a brick.

yeah the mod you have (and any mod for that matter) will be able to run games off HDD, you should def look into it as it saves a hell of a lot of headaches.

So I can follow a SoftMod guide even though its already modded with a D2C to play backups?

Do I update to the 4.x firmware before I do the mod or leave it at 3.1E and follow a guide for SoftModding from this fw?

What is the best guide to follow? The simpler the better, I've been away for a months and am just trying to re-learn to type again - it's like writing on the first day back at school after the school holidays haha!

I am running 3.2E with a Wiinja v2 chip and HDD. All games work fine. If you're gonna softmod it, you might as well upgrade to 4.2.

How are you running 3.2E and getting new games (NSMBW) to work, I thought they require 4.2E?
Does the softmod override or trick the Wii into thinking its updated or something?

Need to check if I have a compatible HD/USB stick to do the softmod..

Shall I update to 4.2 through the Wii menu first, or do the softmod for 3.1E from Renke's tutorial on here..?
    Is there any difference?

Sorry for noobness guys! Been outta the loop..

The 4.2 update was an anti piracy update, there is nothing in 4.2 that 4.1 didn't give you.

A 4.2 update from nintendo puts those anti-piracy measures in place, which means you will need to undo them.

A 4.2 update via the 4.2 safe updater, updates all the ios's (required to play the newer games - kinda like drivers)and the system menu (4.2) without installing the anti-piracy measures.

So you can stay on 3.2 as long as you update the ios's (drivers) to their latest versions.

However some of the 'Protection' that we use against accidental updates & Bricks is System menu Specific ie:- 3.2,4.0,4.1 & 4.2

    Thanks renke..

I'm just gonna follow through your walkthrough guide (great work btw!)...
Is there any risk of me bricking the Wii (apart from my own stupidness ) if I follow this through to the letter, regardless of fw versions and all the other stuff...?

    Thanks again!

Read all the way through and after step (1) if you can install BootMii as Boot2 make sure you do a nand backup BEFORE you go to step(2)
    and all should be well.

Sorry to be a pain, last question mate before I start.

Should I update to 4.x BEFORE I start going through the guide (and use the 4.x update files) or should I leave it as-is at 3.1E and follow the guide using the 3.x files?

    Thanks again!

the 4.2 guide assumes that the wii has been updated via nintendo so tells you how to undo the anti-piracy mods that you don't have.
So do you wii as a 3.1 and follow the guide - then at the end you will be on 4.2.

    Hey renke,

Just realised I only have 4gb SDHC cards here...
To use these crads ona Wii I need to update to 4.2fw to support them, but the first thing on the "Not to Do" list is Do Not Update Online....

Is it OK to update online (I guess to 4.2, unless it does incremental updates?) and then follow the guide for 4.2 using my 4gb SDHC cards?

    Or shall I go buy a 2gb non-SDHC card?

Also, I notice bannerbombv1 doesnt hack a 3.1 hacks.ini, only for 3.2 - is this the one I should be moving to the root folder as per the guide?

    Thanks!

    Hi ,

    BannerBomb v1is for wii's 4.1 and below
    BannerBomb v2 is for 4.2 wii's

All bannerbomb does is load the Hackmii installer (HBC,BootMii,DVDX)

Hacks.ini is a file that priiloader uses to add protection to your wii and the only supported system menus are 3.2,4.0,4.1 & 4.2

If it were me I'd try and borrow a 2gb SD card first, I know people do update via nintendo then follow the 4.2 guide. But you never know if your gonna get that latest update from nintendo that kills homebrew? At the end of the day it's your wii.
The nintendo update also updates boot2 which carries a very slim chance of bricking your wii.

    Regards

Does this mean that it won't work on my 3.1E box as it currently is on 3.1E fw?

You won't be able to install priiloader on a 3.1 system as there's no hacks.ini file for that system menu.
But installing priiloader is one of the last things you do, and you will be on 4.2 by then.

But you should be able to install bootmii as boot2 and do a nand backup at the begining.

    Thanks mate!

Installed the homebrew channel, and (forgive the silly question) where it says load BootMii and NAND Backup I cant find that in the HBC...
EDIT: My bad, found it....you meant go to...in the tutorial LOL.../me idiot!

Also...the bits that say "Not required for <fw3.3" etc, I just totally skip those, as I'm on 3.1E, right?

Just don'twant to assume and miss a step and fook it up

When you start step (1) you are presented with the following options

    · Then it should pop up Load boot.dol/elf?
    · Click load boot.dol/elf file to start installation
    · Wait for scam warning to load then press 1 to continue
    · HackMii installer will now present you with the following 3 options
    1231: Install HomeBrew Channel
    1232: Install DVDX
1233: Install BootMii as either Boot2 or IOS

This is where you install Bootmii - Follow the on screen instructions, files will be written to the sd card.
After you install BootMii as Boot2 power down the wii and power back on with the sd still in.
BootMii will now load - GOTO Nand Backup Spoiler

Just skip the stuff for 3.3 and above
