Default using an ordinairy voda sim in iphone locked to vodafone

    hi guys,

A friend's just come to me with an iphone locked to vodafone. He has a non iphone vodafone sim. This should work in his iphone shouldn't it? He says it doesn't. Surely it should be able to make calls and not accept data at least.

i would try the other operator sims in it (orange, o2) just in case it's not vodafone after all.

I tried my o2 iphone sim, no dice. But it does say carrier Vodafone in settings.

You might need to plug it into iTunes with the new sim in it first to activate it?

if it's activated it should just work with all sims from the same carrier. I'm presuming his sim is a modern 3g capable usim type sim ?

it may be that he's been sold a blocked phone

If its a blocked phone then you can check as it will say in the settings not allowed to connect to carrier or something similar.

not sure of his sim type, i was assuming it was a usim but will have to speak with him. There was nothing indicating that it was blocked in settings.

If it's blocked, what's the work around if there is one? or has he just bought an ipod touch! lol

IF it's blocked, there is no workaround apart from selling it to someone in a foreign country

Well it's unlocked now. think he went to the 02 shop with it. I've just hooked it up to itunes and says it's unlocked, put my iphone sim in but it came up on the iphone screen as different sim inserted. He's buggered off again now though, so i've left it at that and told him to get a usim - his was a non 3g one.

What's the deal with different sim inserted though. Shouldn't it just work with any iphone sim? If i did a restore would it lock it again?

Cheers for your help on this one guys. I just wish he'd leave it with me so i can mess around with it though.

it must have been an o2 one all along then, although afaik they don't / can't unlock them on the spot. They tell apple to unlock and apple do it through iTunes.

I'd love to know what the story is, see if you can find out please

He told me he bought it off a bloke unlocked. He put his old voda (non 3g) sim in and it dind't work. Brought it to me, i put my iphone sim in nothing doing. I looked in the settings and it said carrier vodafone. He then went off, came back, told me he took it to o2 shop, they looked at it and said the unlock hadn't been done properly took it for 5 minutes and said it was now done. Now i'm not sure if it was the o2 shop, or some independent shop, will check.

Looked at the settings again and it said o2 as carrier but my o2 iphone sim wouldn't work. it asked to be connected to itunes, which i did, itunes said it was unlocked yet when i put my sim in it still said different sim.

Wanted to do a restore but he's since gone off again.

Done a quick google and it mentions ssh'ing into the phone and putting new lockdown file in. If he wants me to do this, then it's a spirit jailbreak, cydia, open ssh etc.
