    Default DVD Read Error (1051)

    Has anyone got this before?

I've just updated an patched an old (about 2 years old) Wii, it was on 4.1E and for some reason stopped reading backup games, so I updated it to 4.2E and followed the guide posted on here - however im getting 'DVD Read Error (1051)' when i'm trying to load a game via NeoGamma, originals seem to work but I've tried several backups and nothing...

Could it be the laser giving up?

I'm getting the same error on a brand new Wii.

    I'm using NeoGamma R8 RC1, IOs249 (Rev 17).

The games work fine on an older Wii.

    H4ss4n,
Has your wii got the newer D2-3 drive chipset? if so the newer wii's won't play backup discs.

    mark1984,
What discs are you using dvd-r

Damn it, 'There is a 100% chance the chipset is GC2-D3-2 (v2) with no drive chip.'

I've seen a few of the older machines start to struggle with DVDr now, even on high quality media. Considering the cheap price of external HDDs, and the massive convenience using one brings, I dont think either of you should worry.

I'm using Ritek G05, but tried a few different one's that worked before... Was just curious as I've never seen that message before...

Yeah I'm starting to think it may have had a new drive, its actually my sisters and my niece managed to wedge a DS game in the DVD slot about 6 months ago, it was sent back to Nintendo who apparently removed the game and sent it back with no charge saying nothing was done - but I think they may have swapped the drive to the newer one as this is the first time they have tried to play backups since its been returned...

I myself prefer the USB hard drive method, I find them some prices and say its the only option...

    Thanks for the responses..

Here's a couple to look at Mark,

    Currys:-
Free delivery on all orders at the minute

    320GB WD Elements Drive £39.99
    500GB WD Elements Drive £49.99 <--- cost 2 games?

I have found these drives to be very good, all my friends have them.
They also have the more robust 'mini usb port' rather then the 'micro usb port' found on the newer WD Passports.

    Regards

Those 2 drives look great, I got a buffalo one that was much more expensive, just cos it was white and matched Wii nicel
    y. Mine is 320g and its more than big enough since most games automatically shrink down to a few gig.
