The last time I saw something like that it was on a failed video card (which happened to be an Nvidia 6800GT OC) - That was replaced under warranty.
Prior to that it was also a video card issue but one where the fan had stopped rotating and the card was overheating.
Sounds like overheating and a possible GPU BGA issue. Is it a nVidia GPU?
Sony laptops are like a pandoras box so if you decide to open it be very careful. Check the fan is spinning freely, blow the fan and heatsink out with airduster. You could even clean the CPU and GPU and apply some Arctic Silver 5 paste.
If the GPU is on it's way out then you can try the heatgun fix.
What is the full model number mate? Some Sonys are covered by extended warranty on GPU failure due to the massive nVidia chip problems.
hi, its a vaio vgn-nr21z, here's are some pics
the last pic is what the graphics look like, weird thing is, it was like that today, but now its ok and its not been switched off even when the graphics screwed up i left it on.
there was a little dust on the fan but nothing i would call major, if i get some heatsink paste could help? or would i be off better pissing into the wind?
Classic Nvidia graphics card fail,
probably get the same results with external monitor.
Motherboard will need replaced, phone up Sony they will replace it for ya
apparently my warranty expired in july last year

got a reply to my email.
Thank you for contacting us.
Unfortunately your unit is not one of the ones that were covered with the extended warranty concerning the Nvidia GPU fault. So the repairs would be billable.
I'd like to further ask which type of problems are you having with your unit?
If it is lines or graphical glitches, do they appear on BIOS as well? You can access the BIOS by tapping the F2 button when powering your VAIO.
If there are no problems there you might be able to fix the problems by updating your graphics drivers.
Here is the latest update for you.

you could try and find someone to reball the graphics card i am doing these fooking sony vaios all the time so go online and find a company that wiill reball it for ya and all should be well. It is defo a heating problem sonys are shit lie that mate
been quoted £150 for a re-ball, only comes with a 3 month warranty though, was hoping for something longer than that.
I've got an old sony with a similar problem. I diagnosed by bending the laptop which would produce the fault if bent one way and it would fix itself if I bent it the other way - although I wouldn't advise doing this yourself as this will only make the bad connections even worse (as well as cause god knows what other damage).
im using the wife netbook for everything now,
i cant get it to boot normally only in safe mode and i struggle to mkae things out with the dodgy display, piece of sony junk!
