umm my guess would be faulty psu. Board faults usually give a yellow light.

    u need a medium philips a flatblade and a torx t8 driver
its easy but time consuming with lots of different screws
im sure there are loads of guides out there
and patience ! some delicate ribbon cables in there.

Remember, that's at security/tamper proof torx 8 driver you need (one with a hole in the centre of the bit). As malty said, defo sounds like PSU if it just goes on then off.

looking at it looks like the mobo runs nearly everything off the 12v rail and then regulates it down locally
the psu states a whopping 32A for the 12V!
i guess the 5v standby supply is working but maybe the 12V isnt coming on.
how i would love a schemi for one of these consoles!

ok heres an update, as im a bit puzzled
after regreasing the heatsinks in my own ps3 with some artic silver (which has sorted it and its now running silently again), i tried my psu in this dead one
hey presto it worked.tried the old psu back in it, dead
so i bought a new one, which worked fine , loaded a disc and then the unit powered down and will not power up again. exactly the same fault with new supply
now it only did this after i fitted the blu ray drive back up and loaded a disc
its as if it has killed the new supply
my only thought is that the blu ray drive is maybe causing some internal fuses or protection to blow in the psu.
weird. any ideas fellas? strange one.

Hmm, strange, the drive will only draw the current it requires and the voltage to the drive will be regulated. Even if the voltage regulator to the drive failed, it would kill the drive, not the PSU, or would simply not supply any voltage. Sounds like either your wall socket is causing surges or the new PSU was faulty. Test it again with your other PSU and fit a surge protector to the socket and see if it trips. If it does, that's your problem, if not, then it's obv something else.

Send it back for another one and see how it goes, should be covered by warranty if it failed that quick and was not a power surge that killed it. Will be up to the seller to determine if it was a surge or if they will simply replace it.

You could also go over your old faulty PSU with a multi-meter to try and find what part has failed. Might give you a better idea what is happening.

nothing to the with surge im sure. the unit is being tested on my workbench, complete with surge protection.
when i tested the faulty unit with my good psu the BR drive was not fitted (it boots without it i checked) and the unit came on fine. the unit was also defo faulty (shutdown flashing red led) with BR removed and old "faulty" psu in place.
will strip the switch mode down & take to work tomorrow to investigate.
of course i could have been stitched up with a bad supply, its 2nd hand ebay job.
it was working just fine til the disc loaded and spun up though.
im refurbing a couple more next week for mates, so i can also test these supply's in another unit (not taking mine apart again its all shiny & clean now lol).

Fair play, lol. Was gonna say, why not just test your known working one and see what happens. If it works fine, then the supply was faulty, if it fails, then obv it's something to do with the console/drive.
