i don't think there's anything legal that would give you good returns on such a small amount in a year, shares maybe, if you were very lucky but you could easily end up losing.

Premium bonds perhaps for a chance of a good return but its hard making cash at the moment.

Buy Euros, they've performed poorly of late and once confidence returns in the eurozone it'll bounce back. Although £1k isn't going to see a massive return, try remortaging instead.

Premium bonds is a sort of gambling, but you only gamble the interest you would make in a bank.

If you want security then use your personal cash ISA, it will give you a higher rate of interest than any savings account after tax is taken into account.

If you want to maximise your potential earnings (and have a bit of fun at the same time) then play the stock market using your stocks and shares ISA. This is risky, but the FTSE is very low at the moment so if you pick your company carefully it could end up very profitable.

An ISA would probably give you 5% on the first year (some banks offer this if you shop around), and then drop to the current rate with is about 1 to 1.5% if you are lucky, so that would make you 50 quid in a year, and 15 quid the following years. KERRCHIIIIING!

even if you bought a grands worth of FTSE shares and they shot up, it wouldnt make you much would it? I bought 6ks worth about 10 month ago when they were pretty low and in the first 6 month they made me £600, I expect my next bi annual update to be less spectacular though.

i dont know to be honest, I know they were quite low at the time, went up and dropped again. I bought into some system where you pay a fee and the bank (natwest) invests in various companies they think show potential, on the FTSE market, I have to admit I didn't put a lot of thought into it, I was just fed up of seeing my ISA sat there doing virtually f'kall so stuck them into that instead. I dont have the paper work here and cant remember the name of the account.

A FTSE 100 tracker now should give you a better return than bank interest, however this isnt guarenteed. Even with a 20% return, on £1000 it is only £200, so not going to make you rich overnight, but would probably be a prudent investment.

BP shares - here you could be looking at a 60-70% return in 2 years time, or lose it all within the year - too many factors affecting this to discuss here, but probably warrants a dedicated thread. let us know what you end up doing!
