PS3 Strange PS3 problem disc read

Bought a cheap 40GB PS3 off a mate it just stopped loading discs and he was gonna bin it as he wanted a slim ps3

so got it off him and thought straight away needs a new laser as I've changed loads of them and it showed the commons signs of not spinning the disc up

so bought a new laser for it and fitted it in disc starts spinning straight away, great i though boxed it all up and gave it to the kids for their room only to have them calling me saying dad it wont read my game????

stripped it down again and it's still spinning up the disc ok so thought it could be a dodgy laser so took the laser out of my ps3 and stuck it in their to test it and same thing disc spins up fine but just won't read the disc don't even get the spinning icon in the top right hand corner

when messing around with it i also noticed that when you press the create a memory stick icon for ps2 and ps1 games the system freezes but not in a ylod way as the wave is still moving in the background and the only thing you can do is turn it off and on again

everything else on the ps3 works fine

    have tried the following

    different hdd
    reset all settings
    rebuilt database
    reset to factory
even tried another bluray drive just to see if it reads dvd films but it doesn't

have run out of ideas now any else got any
if it's no good then will just strip it for spares

    BTW all connectors look fine

the only other thing i can think of is doing a re-flow on it but can't see this doing anything

Hmm strange one, sounds like you've tried everything. Could be a fooked drive board, but don't think they are repairable. Seen similar with the 360, new board sorts it out, but you cant read the drive key from the PS3 drive AFAIK, so it's not fixable, well Sony could fix it, but that's about it until someone comes up with a method to read & write the drive key.
