    Default Recommended NAS drive?

    Hey all,
I've just moved into a new apartment which is wired up with ethernet ports in all the rooms. So I plan to buy a Network hard disk to sit in the broom cupboard and act as a central store for the missus, me, PS3 etc..

Can anyone recommend a decent NAS drive (with or without hard disks). I'm guessing that for my limited uses, it won't need to be that fast and it doesn't need to have any wireless connectivity. Typically the biggest demand will be streaming HD videos to the telly.

    Cheers

What about the LG ones that have been on Hot UK Deals recently.

I've ordered a 1TB (2 Bay Hot Swappable) with a Blueray recording drive built in for £190 inc del. This has GB Lan, USB, eSATA and card slots. You can get various incarnations of these so worth looking around.

I also have a 2TB 2 bay Synology one which is pretty good.
    Stu.... :-)

I set up a freenas box I was hoping to use at work, used a rocketraid (1740?) card, xfer speeds were terrible. Dunno what it would be like with other controllers though.

qnap seems to be the name that keeps popping up for quality nas' but I'm also reluctant to spend that much on one - you could buy a whole pc and fairly decent raid controller for the price I've seen some of them.

At work, we got a wd sharespace 8gb to temporarily hold some data and I think the thing is a pos. xfer speeds aren't great and we sometimes have issues with authentication. Manual claims it will only accept wd drives.

Buffalo Linkstation will do the job. They come in various sizes not bad prices considering the options they have.

One downside no hot swapping and single drive.

The point about Qnap is that they are really well made and featured with excellent support. Also just buy what you need, don't buy a huge multi bayed enclosure if you don't need it, I have a single bay and when I needed more storage I just hung a USB drive on it. I have seen lots of complaints about other systems including Buffalo but rarely about Qnap.

Yeah I'd so go Qnap for the reasons blaggard states.

I stupidly bought a Linkstation Pro as I had read about putting custom *nix firmware on and getting the Linkstation to do more than just host files. My friend bought the Qnap. 6 months later, he's like a pig in shit and I'm still trying to get the Linkstation to do half of what I had hoped to do
