Xbox Live Rumour – COD subcription plan leaked in gameplay video

Looks like there’s no smoke without fire. The video after the break apparently shows a “membership” plan for Call of Duty, via Modern Warfare 2. If a video recorded by a 360Junkies member is to be believed, the sub-plan would be payable via MS points. The video shows the player trying to join a multiplayer session in the game via a friend’s gamercard, as detailed below. “I was trying to join a friend’s session on MW2 the other day and had this screen pop up. It clearly says at the top of this menu: ‘Modern Warfare 2 Membersh’, in which we can confidently assume that the last word is “Memberships”. If you’ll notice at the bottom is an option to “Add Microsoft Points”, clearly indicating that this was intended to be a menu for purchasing different levels of Membership, presumably memberships would have been offered in a variety of durations. ”Remember, this could be anything. We’ll try and get a comment from Activision.

I am not sure on the validity of the video but they have been throwing the idea out into the wild I presume to gage reaction, I would like to think people will just say fuck it I pay for live and am not paying more but no doubt enough fuckpuppets will pay and eventually make it the norm.

Activision Must Start Charging for Call of Duty Online Play, says Pachter
Following the recent NPD sales report, which revealed software sales plummeting 15% for the month of June, Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter tried to figure out exactly what the heck has been going on. June marks the fourth negative month of decline this year, but why?

Pachter said part of the problem stems from Nintendo now bundling two games in with the Wii, and many consumers buying clearance software with their new, cheaper Xbox 360s. The bigger issue, however, is the rise of online multiplayer gaming, which obviously gives any game more replay value, which in turn means that those players are less inclined to go out and buy new software.

"...we think that the overall decline was due to a very large number of people playing multiplayer online games for free on PlayStation Network, and for an annual fee with unlimited game play on Xbox Live," Pachter noted. "We estimate that a total of 12 million consumers are playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 for an average of 10 hours per week on the two platforms’ respective networks, and the continued enjoyment of this game (along with an estimated 6 million Halo online players, 3 million EA Sports players, and 5 million players playing other games, such as Battlefield, Red Dead Redemption, Left 4 Dead and Grand Theft Auto) has sucked the available time away from what otherwise would be spent playing newly purchased games."

He continued, "We see this as a continuing problem, and think that unless and until the publishers come up with a business model that appropriately captures the value created by the multiplayer experience, we are destined to see a migration of game playing away from packaged goods purchases and toward multiplayer online. While the shift has been great for consumers, who are enjoying an unprecedented, and largely free, game experience, it has been devastating for publishers and shareholders, who are seeing sales and profits decline."

Ultimately, Pachter says Activision will have to lead by example and push the industry and its online games in the paid direction. Gamers will not like it one bit, but if the experience is as compelling as Modern Warfare 2, then gamers will probably pay. Pachter's advice is no doubt music to Bobby Kotick's ears, who's already said that he'd like to turn the entire Call of Duty business into a subscription.

"We think that it is incumbent upon Activision, with the most popular multiplayer game, to take the first step to address monetization of multiplayer. It is too early to tell whether that will be a monthly subscription, tournament entry fees, microtransaction fees, or a combination of all three, but we expect to see the company take some action by year-end, when Call of Duty Black Ops launches," Pachter commented.

"The company has the greatest experience of the Western publishers with multiplayer subscriptions, given its huge success with World of Warcraft, and we expect Activision to apply a WoW-type model to its Call of Duty franchise. It is likely that Activision will ease the pain of consumers, and will continue to offer some form of free multiplayer, at least for a while, but we believe it is imperative that the company begin to capture some value from the huge number of hours spent – 1.75 billion hours on Xbox Live alone through mid-April, and we estimate that this figure is approaching 4 billion hours combined through today on Xbox Live and PSN. We are quick to point out that the average single player game has an expected play time of under 30 hours, suggesting that a staggering 133 million units of equivalent game play have been spent (so far) playing Call of Duty online, with Activision only seeing revenues from the original 20 million units sold, plus an estimated 8 million map packs sold."

Agreed. Bollocks to having to pay for the ability to play online with a load of squeaky voiced pre pubescents. The games are expensive enough, especially so when you factor in additional DLC.

That bit makes me laugh with the use of ONLY, 8 million map packs sold so ONLY about £50 million on that forgetting the original £800 million plus, these are greedy bastards and should stop moaning about declining sales as it's due to the lack of releases and shit releases, people are only sticking to old games as there is fuck all new worth paying for.

if this happens, i for one will stop playing it full stop, infact i will prob buy another 360 to flash just so i can rip the fuckers off. lets look at this, first they want us to play on line, 24/7 then they start to charge for dlc, now as well as a sub to live ive got to pay again? i will just go back to pc gaming or ps3 if it remains free on that. this could really hurt the console as a whole if this happens, live will go backwards

This is definatley the future of gaming. It costs a fortune to keep the servers running. If you think about Halo 3 its a really old game with 100's of thousands players still using it online. They will eventually give you the basic game download for free then charge per month to subscribe. It combats piracy, brings in revenue to keep the servers alive but it sucks!

Surely this would have to be implemented on PS3 aswell. Otherwise it might signal the move for many people to the superior console especially now prices are around the £200 mark with free online gaming.

I wouldn't mind it if they decide to charge for you to play a game online more than a year after it comes out.

As stated before, tons of people still play Halo 3 and the server costs must be massive. If you got a years free subscription with the new title that would be fine, then a year on you have to pay to play online thats fine by me. If I'm still playing a game a year after I buy it then it was well worth the cost of buying and if its worth playing more then I wouldn't mind investing again as long as its not a pisstake.

The only game I've ever played more than a year off and on would be Modern Warfare 1.

There was a game on Xbox IIRC whereby you bought it for very cheap then had to pay a subscription to play it online (on top of Xbox Live subs). I think it was called fantasy star or something like that. Not sure if it was any good or if it took off.

I think the future should be free online gameplay but they are going in the opposite direction!

I read about this the other day but just thought it was nonsense cant see this working as people will just move onto other games like bad company and the new medal of honour unless it starts on all games. I agree with russbeer if you still want to play online after a year of it being released then it would not be too bad but when you consider how much they have made off that game it stinks. I mean the two map packs alone on ps3 are 22 quid that is nearly as much as i payed for the game and then there is only 6 new maps the others are all old maps from cod4.

1st it was EA with a sub fee for 2nd hand online gaming, but now Activision are pulling a fast one. EA and Activision are the biggest bunch of cunts going.

The only way to stop this happening is if everyone just stops buying the games with a subs fee, once they realise that people won't pay they will soon change there minds. The only problem is the world is full of cunts that will simply pay it anyway.

check one of the developers on twitter (fourzerotwo)

he's just posted the following approx

Modern Warfare 2 subscription plan rumors going around.
For the record, nobody has to pay to play COD or MW2 multiplayer, nor will they.
