How to extend cable for ADSL? phone line or cable from filter

Hi gents.
I have had adsl connection fitted yesterday. But I need to move the wireless modem up one floor for better wireless reception.

What I need to know is better to extend the telephone line approx 20m then put the adsl filter on it.

Or to leave the line & adsl filter downstairs & plug a 20m modem lead into the adsl filter to the wireless modem?

Also i have been given a talktalk wireless modem but i am going to use a 3com modem instead. Are there any special settings apart from the usual passwords etc that are unique to talktalk?

No settings unique to TalkTalk - I use my Netgear DG834G with them.

I have an extension on mine mate, I've extended the lead from the filter downstairs to the modem (upstairs in the spare bedroom/games room) and have no speed degradation from using it without the extension lead.

Thanks rikman, I was worried about speed degrading.
I will leave the adsl filter plugged in downstairs & just use a 20m lead for adsl modem instead of the 1m lead that came with the modem.
