Wii hard drive

I have at the moment a chipped wii which plays most of my old games with no problems but looking at the hard drive option to save on discs etc can anyone recommend a usb hard drive they use ?

Judging by 909's reply in steve10574 thread below wiiflow seems a nice option is this all i need to install once i have homebrew installed? or is there more?

Looks like i may need someone to talk me through this one as im a total noob just used to getting games and loading them up but worried about latest firmware etc stuffing up my wii

I bought a Western Digital elements drive 500gb one, based on advice given here.
Works fine and does not go into sleep mode like some other drives. Thinking about it now 500gb is too big really I got every game i want on it plus all homebrew stuff and still i have 3/4 of drive spare, I'm never gonna fill it.

Check renkes guide and just fix homebrew channel and all the mods he recommends.

Get "back up manager for wii" and make a wbfs partition on ur usb drive and install games to it from ISO using the back up manager.

I just used a £8 "Icy Box" USB2 Enclosure with a regular 300gb IDE HD I had laying around in my box of hard drives.

Works perfect!

Follow Renke's guide and you can't go wrong, did mine a few weeks back

Western Digital is the way forward. Got a 1TB connected to mine. No problems and games coming out of my earholes!

virtually any USB drive will work, there is a table somewhere online that tells you which they have tested, but i think if you stick to major brands you have little to worry about. The main thing to consider is if you want it to be powered by usb too, as some people dont want to have another power socket used up and the additional cables, but thats purely down to preference. I got a buffalo portable drive for mine, 320gig and white so it matches my wii nicely.

To answer your other point, wiiflow, or any usb loader will work and it is pretty much all you'll need once you have the homebrew channel installed, again its down to preference. You have the option to either run it from the homebrew channel or install it as its own channel, although im not sure if the way your machine is hacked effects the ability to install channels.

im using a Buffalo Drivestation harddrive with no problems, I have USB Loader GX on mine, just make sure you follow the guide as reccomended to fully protect your wii from anychance of bricking in the future

I use a WD Passport 500GB drive with a 100GB partition on it Wii formatted.

I've got a USB extension cable that runs into the drawer under my TV that I pull out and plug the HDD into when I want to use it - leaving me just short of 400GB usable on my PC/Laptop.

When I connect it to the PC it'll give me the usual message when a HDD is connected (For one partition) and a message about formatting before use for the Wii partition which I just dismiss.

I use Configurable USB Loader with a Forwarder on the Wii Menu.

I finally have usb loader gx running didnt have much luck with wiiflow using an old powered usb dive i had lying round but thanks for replies i will get another drive now i know it works...

another noob question do i need to get pal images or will ntsc work just as well .ie is there a region free setting somewhere?

Both will work with a USB loader.

If you use seagate" free agent " drives , you need to disable power manegment with "seagate manager"
you will get that on ther website.
