Help How does a noob softmod a 3.0e Wii

I've been given an old Wii which has firmware 3.0e on it and was wondering how i would go about softmodding it?
I know i need to update it but i'm unsure weather i should just take it online and update to the latest firmware or if i should be doing something else first?

I've spent an hour or two googling and it has just left me not knowing where to start or what to do, theirs just way to much info and different options.......

Can anyone explain the best way to go about getting the Wii to a point where i can follow Renke's Ultimate Wii Soft Mod Guide 2010?

    Cheers

    Now then,

The latest nintendo update is 4.3 and you don't want to put that on your Wii.
Softmodding a Wii on 3.0E is no hassle at all.
Also you will be able to have BootMii as Boot2 (which offers the best Brick Protection)

    >>> SoftModFiles <<<

Download these files and extract to a NON SDHC Card (2GB ideal)
Delete the 'private' folder and replace with the one in the Bannerbomb V1 folder, in the alternative folder

Then Follow this >>> Guide <<< You won't need to do steps 2 &3

Are you going to play games off Hard Drive or Backup Discs?
Don't forget to Install BootMii as Boot2 and DO a NAND Backup

    Regards

Thanx Renke, I will have a rummage around for a non SDHC as i think most the cards i have a SDHC.
I was planning on using a large external HDD but would also like the option to play backups from disk if that is posssible?

After reading through your guide in full it's starting to make bit more sense, i had only read the first spoiler and then went on a google hunt which just confused me, which isn't that hard to do

    Thanks

The only thing i will say is, that Drive requires an external power supply to operate where as the smaller 2.5" drives draw their power from the usb connector on the wii.
Less wires less mess and 500GB is loads of games - Honest

    EDIT:

Many thanks Renke for the info and help
