PS3 Ok, so I've just bought two faulty ps3s...

I'm not sure what's the best thing to do.

One thing has it's disc drive removed but I'm told everything else is probably working.

The other one has the ylod. I've been reading online and there doesn't seem to be a guaranteed way to fix it plus I don't have the equipment.

What is the best/cheapest way to get these two working again? I live in Leeds and if it's cheap enough, I'll pay someone to sort it.

your ps3 missing it's disc drive is scrap as the drives are matched to the motherboards.

The YLOD one can (usually) be fixed in much the same way as 360's can. Clean, reflow, paste, reassemble.

Hard drives aren't matched mate no (you can replace the stock 40/60gb with any other drive to show this)... it's the DISK drives that are paired. ie. The Bluray drive.

the ylod one could be sorted by sony -
ring sony careline tell them THERE ps3 is nt working and u got it as a gift a XMas they will ask where it was bought from ..be blunt say u dont know it was a gift at Xmas and its not your problem where it came from
sometimes they just offer u a replacement there and then, if they get a bit arsey saying the console is over 1yr old according to the serial number kick up a fuss and state UK law says goods of this type should be fit for there purpose for at least 3 years and EU laws cover it for 6 - tell them if they dont sort it your taking it further -they allways agree to swap it out for you with a refurbished console.

Give it a try you have got nothing to lose its only a phone call, I just did it again last wednesday with a really old console I bought for £60 with a broken blu ray drive.

I bought a PS3 a year or so ago from an Auction. Got it home and it wouldn't read anything. I rang Sony and they said they will replace it but needed a receipt. I told them I had it from a market stall and i never had a receipt, they told me I needed one. So a day later I just bought a receipt book, made up a receipt and faxed it over to them. A couple days later I received a new (or reconned) PS3. So it's worth a go ringing Sony.

Fuck, so the missing BD drive ps3 is useless?! That seems crazy.

Does anyone know anyone in Leeds who does ylod fixes (and jtagging ideally)?

I just got a YLOD PS3 and managed to fix it with the gilksy method, but the person i got it off had removed a disk from the drive - everything works fine apart from the drive wont take a disk and when i press the eject button it makes a gear clicking sound.

I presume the drive is locked as it thinks theres a disk still in there...

Does anyone know how to solve this? is it possible to reset the drive?

    Cheers

    Mark

Does the drive take any of the disk mate?

I had one where it would take it halfway, I basically opened up the drive, powered on, put the disk in so it was pulled halfway, then looking down through the drive simply pulled (carefully) the disk into the drive so it was flush with the centre spindle.

There was a bit of a click (as you say gears etc) but was perfect after that.

Be careful you don't snap anything, but there will be a click no matter what.

PS. I take no responsibility for any damage that may arise haha

Thanks mate, after researching YouTube i found about re-aligning the drive, basically where the disk had been taking out the drive was still engaged was stuck... so had to take out the motor on the drive and move the gearing... then the drive drops back into position... re-built and all working perfectly - well cuffed

Keep it as a spare now incase my one dies...

Got a bloke to fix the ylod for 30 quid. He's given me a 3 month warranty. Should I leave it on cycling a rendered video to test it or just treat it normally?

Reason I ask is cause he says if it does go again the 2nd fix will definitely work for good so I'm wondering if I should test it heavily so IF it's gonna break again, it does it in the 3 months.
