why not just update to 3.2?

Or use a book reader like stanza, thats a very good alternative.

afaik you can only get iBooks on ipad 3.2 or iPhone 4.0. You'll need to use something else. My personal fave is Amazon Kindle app and GoodReader is pretty good

I've got iBooks on my 8gb 3G (iOS4.01). But with the 600 ibooks from here on it, it's dog slow and resource hungry.

Gonna fuck it off probably and use kindle when I can be bothered

I've been using Stanza since day one and definately prefer it to iBooks. The only advantage i can see to Apple's effort is ease of syncing. Dropbox certainly helps though if you're not on iOS4 (for the iTunes sync option)
