    Default Remoulds

As in title got some remoulds for my van front wheels, after looking on the internet i have found that you have to use them at a certain speed !.
Just curious on what speeds i should be driving at, as the company who put them on didn't give me the safe speed i wont be going over 70 mph .
    Thanks in advance

I've been expounding my views AGAINST the need for Summer/Winter tyres In another thread HOWEVER, buying cheap copy tyres or worse, remould tyres is endangering your life, worse it's endangering mine!

utter shit and should be against the law. God knows why they aren't already.

Misguidedly, I bought 2 remoulds to put onto a camper van many years ago. Drove 100 miles round trip on them and all the tread fell off the middle third of the tyre. Utterly dangerous

Get them off and get some proper tyres on it asap, remoulds are good for burning and maybe growing potatoes in the garden and that's pretty much it mate. They are dangerous.

You stand in the waiting area of a decent tyre place. By decent I mean anywhere that doesn't sell remoulds.

I heard someone years ago used them on they Landrover deffender, it was ok as the thing only ever went arround their farm never on public roads. But they were always told max speed of 50mph, I don't know if that has changed but tyres are somthing I never scrimp on

It is a pity that comes from the Retreaders Association because it makes the information a bit iffy. If it's true, which to be honest it probably is, then it could put your mind at rest.

I have heard loads of lorries and busses use them before, however something is ringing a bell to suggest that commercial grade tyres are more designed for it than passenger car tyres like what are probably on your van.

I reckon you're going to be shitting yourself constantly if you keep them after this thread. I certainly wouldn't keep them if I was in your situation, simply because I like to relax in some sort of relative safety when in the car and that just isn't going to be possible after everyone has said they are terrible.

If it comes to it, Ebay them to reclaim some of the cash from buying proper new ones.

If you want to keep them and want to know the max speed that they are rated for, look at the code on the tyres. It will be something like 195 55 R15 95T. That last letter (T in my example) is the important one that describes the speed classification - look it up on this chart http://www.tyres-online.co.uk/techinfo/speed.asp Looking at the chart, the lowest one available is 87mph so you should be fine unless you are really trying to lose your license.

Nothng wrong with remoulds these days. They are made to a high standard and are just as good as standard tyres.

In 2004 the standard that remoulds were made to increased and was brought in line with new standard tyres.

Don't worry about the remoulds they will be perfectly safe.

Tyres are the contact with the road. IMO tyres and brakes are two things I would never go the "cheap" route on. They may well be better than a few years ago, but I wouldn't feel safe with them on my car.

Agreed part worns are a lot more dangerous (as you dont konw whats happend to them). Remoulds now days have to meet very high standards (all carcasses have to be tested/inspected before use etc) Just remember when you fly off on holiday most aircraft tyres are remolded upto 6 times before they are scrapped as long as some iffy airline has not worn them down to the canvas !.

I've heard that remoulds are much better too. I remember in my old mans day there were lots of tales of the tread coming away, but it doesn't happen anymore.

That said, I wouldn't put them on my motor, but I think thats mainly due to growing up in that era when they were dangerous.

I used to buy remoulds when I was 17 on my mk1 escorts, as it was either that or be off the road...budget was that tight....But no way would I buy them now....
I remember once being told that the big chunks of truck tire tread that you see at the side of the motorway quite frequently are delaminated remolds....not sure if thats true or not.

I work for a tyre manufacturer who produces tyres for trucks, many of the tyres we make are desinged to be retreaded, some of the carcasses are guranteed for 1million miles thats 4 retreads. I dont think there is an issue with remoulds they are designed like that to save money long term.
