Default VAG COM for Mk5 Golf GT TDI

I noticed in another thread someone mentioned the VAG COM software for engine diagnostics. I've just looked into it and it seems there are many versions of not only the software but the cable too.

Does anyone know which version of the software I would need and which cable I would need for a Mk5 Golf GTTDI 140? There is all this talk of CAN and non CAN and from my googling I can't work out which is needed.

If I need the CAN feature does that mean the cheapie cables off ebay won't work?

    Spot on.

The MK5 Golf and MK2 Leon use the new CANBUS interface.

You need either Hex+CAN which covers pretty much everything or the cheaper MicroCAN which only supports the MK5 Golf (A5 Platform) and later CAN enabled cars and not the older K Line stuff.

    More info - http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/interfaces.html

Don't buy a cheapo from eBay mate.

Best thing to do if you only want a one off or occasional use is join one of the Golf or other VAG forums where there are lists of members, usually by location, who have the cable and are willing to help for free or at worst the price of a pint.
    Stu.... :-)
