If you can get the light at the right angle, it can pick up detail which is not easily seen otherwise.
As is the case here, shown by angling the flash from below and to the right of the subject.
You can clearly see the effect here, as the iridescent colours shows on the wings of this aphid walking down the stem of a rose in the garden this evening.
