Default Giving a reference for someone else

Just had a shock this morning when one of the admin girls said she was leaving in 2 weeks and asked if I could be her reference for here.

Is bit of a strange one - I'm not in management, I just fix the pc's and comms. She's told me she doesn't want to get the reference from her line manager as she's had personal difficulties with her which I can easily believe from talking to loads of the previous admin.

I don't think I'm gonna do this cause I can see risk for me, with no potential benefits. I'm also thinking in a building full of managers there has to be someone better she can pick. However, someone had once asked me to do this before and I luckily easily fobbed them off and it's got me thinking, no-one opens my post here. If I was to receive such a request, how would I get caught out?

She's only an admin girl mate, its not like your reference would make it on wikileaks
Seriously I get these all the time from people who know they can't approach their line management, so I just ask them to draft something which I then review and sign. I wouldn't be too paranoid about it, you're not doing anything wrong, its just a reference for a person who's already decided to leave.

Just make it a personal reference form a colleague, no harm in that if you're not pretending to be something else.

Cheers fellas - there was me thinking I'll be damned if I'm gonna put my job on the line for some randomer but suppose I could just write a reference without ever saying I was her boss.

Or get them talking about me as the office mug so I can look forward to one of these for all the rest! I was just interested as I thought there must be some kind of mechanism I haven't got a clue about that would pull up something like this. £50 a reference anyone?

I'd be careful that it's not against company policy - some places ask that all you say is xyz worked for company abc between dates 1-2.

The issue your company could face is if you say anything untrue or inaccurate then there can be legal ramifications for your company and shit flows downhill...

i see it as more trouble than it may be worth mate

companies probably wont take too kindly to people doing references 'on their behalf'.

you could be the one facing disciplinary action (unless its purely a character / personal reference)

I've been asked to do this in the past and have always refused. Didn't want some idiot phoning my work places HR up asking about a reference i've given that they didn't know about - not worth losing my job over.

Let's put it this way, if it was the other one of the two, I might have been up for it but as mentioned in the op I saw no potential benefits.

DF being what it is, I wonder how long before I get asked for pics anyway

As long as you don't do a reference for the company and just a personal one you will be fine

    By the way any pics?

I've been asked to do one for an excolleague who has now moved back to Norway.

Our old company went bust for the second time in May and our boss was an absolute Cunt.

I've given him my details (not the cunt boss) to use as a reference.

If she has done some work for you personally even although she isn't your boss, I don't see any harm in you providing a reference based on your thoughts of how she performed.

To be on safe grounds though, worth be worth highlighting that you aren't management.

I wasn't considering doing it - I think she wanted me to pretend she worked under me or something, managed to avoid her till she left today anyway so all good.

I was just thinking there must be some way it could get caught as it sounds too easy, but still not worth risk to me.
