Being a dad and all that paluva

My missus stunned me last night with news that she was expecting. Actually, not sure why I was so surprised given that we've been married for 4 years and she recently came off the pill, but just the sudden shock and realisation that I will be responsible for another human being has knocked me for six.

She is over the moon and very excited, and I guess I like the idea of being a dad but I'm still a little nervous. I also know from a selfish perspective that many of my indulgences will have to be curbed e.g. I'm cancelling my order for a new car, no more big holidays, automatic gadget updates etc.. However the biggest factor playing on my mind is whether the baby will be healthy, and if it has health issues how well could we cope in a foreign country.

I'm rambling a bit, but I am pleased and hopefully that will turn into genuine excitement as things start to progress.

I know it will be more difficult for the missus, and I have floated the idea about returning home but she won't hear of it. Luckily Basel is only a 90 min flight from London, and its on the Easyjet route so its easy enough for friends and family to start coming over. There are also several expat support groups here, and English speaking creches and nurseries so slowly slowly we should develop a network.

Congrats mate. Me & my mrs are expecting our 1st early December & I'm paying for it already having to finish all the house renovations before due date and saving cash for when she's on maternity. On the plus side tho it gave us both a good reason to give up smoking (4 months now) & for me to try & get fit again.

Congrats GTi, the first 12 weeks of the pregnancy are when things can go wrong, so once you're past this point, relax a bit more.

In can understand your concerns about the childs health in a foreign county but believe me, if something does go wrong your natural instincts kick in and you'll make sure you understand everything, plus you're not in a 3rd world country.
