    windows is generally more expensive hosting, it looks like the site may have been designed with windows .net, if you have linux hosting asp .net wont work. Also if it was asp, 1and1 hosted only supports asp up to version 2. If you have a server you can install the latest version.

    log in to your 1and1 control panel, under packages what does it say you have?

    Hi m8
    thanks for your replies, as i dont know a thing about all this i thought it would just be a simple answer lol but it seems its not that easy, i cant login to the 1&1 control panel as the web designer does all that stuff, my m8 just told him to build a website and host it and thats it.

    But its been about 12 days now and he just keeps saying its not ready and its not HIS fault, so i just thought that info would give a clear answer but obviously not lol

    thanks a lot anyway m8

    Am I missing something or did you not see the screenshot? The error message mentions IIS, and includes the Microsoft .NET framework version and ASP.NET version number. There is also a file path listed with backslashes and a windows style directory name. These are all major risk factors for it being Windows I'd say.

    I don't know Microsoft web hosting systems but I'd guess that could be the host not having a feature required by the web developer, from the error message. He will be blaming the host because it worked on his own machine. The feature could need to be enabled, or possibly will need to be installed. The question is - is the web developer doing it wrong or using a stupid feature, or is the hosting company missing something it should have configured.

    Either way the web developer should know and be able to contact the hosting company to talk to them and understand the problem. If he doesn't, you may want to get a new one or switch him to purely non-technical design and get somebody who knows what they are doing in charge.

    cheers m8, i thought it a bit weird that he said 1&1 just didnt have a clue what the problem was and they are looking into it, a bit weir when a company that size cant host 1 little website.

    on the screenshot the bit that says

    Description: An error occurred during the processing of a configuration file required to service this request. Please review the specific error details below and modify your configuration file appropriately.
    is that refering to the web designer guy ??? or 1&1 itself??

    I actually didn't see that part at the bottom

    1and1 only supports asp 2.0 on shared hosting, if he has any features that require .net 3 or above there will be problems. However, if he is also hosting it for you it's down to him to get the site live for you.

    It seems to me that it is a problem with the way IIS has been setup.

    1, Have you setup your website to be the default website in IIS?

    To do so do the folowing;
    Open IIS Manager from Control Panel > Admin Tools >
    Find your website and make sure it is set to default website
    then Right click and goto Properties).
    check to see if the app name under app settings is greyed out. if it is then click Create and then OK

    That should solve the issue if it is not set as default website on IIS

    if it is set to default website, go through the config file and make sure nothing is set like this;

    "home\website\index.asp" if it is that is only for testing on the machine.

    it should be set to "index.php"

    ALSO make sure the virtual directory is set to be an ASP.NET application.

    If it's using shared hosting you wouldn't be able to set the default site via IIS would you as that would be controlled via 1&1?

    Can you upload a copy of the web.config file as the parser there is complaining about the allowDefinition section?
