Static HTML to Wordpress

Im creating a website for someone and they have a HTML page already but what the site to be on Wordpress. So they basiclly wnt the whole thing to be under the Wordpress engine but still retain the static HTML home page.

I've tried adding code to the html but it just gives me a bunch of errors :/ Does anyone kno any other ways of doing it?

i'm pretty sure Wordpress works in the same way joomla does, you can use standard html/css but to get articles or content to appear in certain places you have to use specific php code. I don't work with Wordpress so sorry I cant be anymore help but i'm almost certain this is the case.
