Police raid on DVD pirate king's flat reveals £80k drug stash
Apr 18 2010 Victoria Weldon, Sunday Mail

A TYCOON who once sold sharks for a living can today be exposed as a coca1ne baron.
Ian Sweeney - who was also Scotland's biggest counterfeiter and a debugging specialist for celebrities - is facing jail after police smashed his drug factory.
The raid revealed £80,000 of coke and a powder used by greedy dealers to bulk out the drugs and make more money.

Officers also discovered scales, blenders, a press and heat sealing machine.
Sweeney, 38, was exposed by the Sunday Mail seven years ago as Scotland's biggest music and movie pirate.

He started up a new sideline - selling 6ft reef sharks for £350 a time - after dodging a "watertight" £17million counterfeiting prosecution using legal loopholes.
Three years ago we revealed that he was sweeping the homes of wealthy crooks, footballers and celebs for listening devices.

But Sweeney last week admitted dealing coke at the High Court in Glasgow.
Prosecutor Peter Ferguson said police searched his flat in Tollcross, Glasgow, in 2008.
Mr Ferguson said: "No one was found within the f lat and it was obviously not being occupied for domestic residential purposes but was being used for the preparation of coca1ne for distribution."
Police found two kilos of coke in a wardrobe plus 25 k ilos of benzocaine - usually used in throat lozenges but also the UK's most common coca1ne "bulking agent".

The cut coca1ne is then pressed into blocks to give the impression that it is pure.
Mr Ferguson added: "The two kilos of coca1ne found in the wardrobe, if sold on the illicit market, would be worth in the region of £80,000, based on a price of £40 per gram.

"Furthermore, benzocaine is often used for bulking out coca1ne to increase its value.
"A 25 kilo drum can be purchased on the illicit market for between £3500 and £5000.
"The accused accepts that he established the illegal operation at his f lat and that he was actively involved during the period of the charge in the bulking out of coca1ne with benzocaine."
Sweeney knows shamed boxing promoter Barry Hughes and once helped him escort ex-boxing champ Scott Harrison from court.

He was seen with Hughes - who last week lost an appeal against a knife conviction - flanking hooded Harrison during an appearance at Glasgow SheriffCourt.
The court last week heard that Sweeney had several bank accounts showing large cash deposits.
He also used cash to pay offcredit cards which had been used to pay for designer clothes and luxury holidays to America, Japan and Mexico.

Five years ago he was hit with a £500,000 proceeds of crime bill after being found guilty of DVD piracy.

The Crown Office refused to say how much of Sweeney's £500,000 ill-gotten gains they managed to recover.

A spokesman said: "This case is closed and we would not give out details on historic cases."
Sweeney, now bankrupt, was remanded and will be sentenced next month.

Glasgow businessman jailed for running drug factory

A businessman has been jailed for four years for running a drug factory from his Glasgow flat.

When police raided Ian Sweeney's home after receiving a tip-off, they found it was not occupied. Instead, it was being used for the preparation of coca1ne for distribution.

Within the flat at the city's Tollcross Road, officers found two kilograms of coca1ne worth £80,000 and a 25 kg drum of Benzocaine, which is used in throat lozenges but is also often used for "bulking out" as well as scales, blenders and a heat sealing machine.

Sweeney, 38, of the city’s West Street, admitted being concerned in the supplying of coca1ne at the Tollcross Road flat between May 12, 2008, and July 12, 2008. The High Court in Edinburgh heard Sweeney had been tempted to get involved for financial reward but wished to express his regret.

Sweeney was described in court as a technical security adviser with a company called Technical Protection Limited and had several bank accounts showing large cash deposits. He used the cash to pay off credit cards which had been used to pay for designer clothes and holidays in America, Japan and Mexico.

Judge Lord Menzies told Sweeney: "The offence to which you have pled guilty is a very serious offence. You were concerned in the supplying of a significant quantity and value of class A drugs and not only was there a significant quantity of coca1ne found within the property but also a large amount of bulking agent and paraphernalia.

"Those who are convicted of being concerned in the supply of class A drugs must expect a significant custodial sentence."

The judge added that the sentence had been reduced from six years due to mitigating factors and the fact that Sweeney had pled guilty.

LoL. Brings back memories. Met Ian once and was in contact with him for a few years. Drove up to Glasgow to meet him. It was him that showed me how to do the chip swap on the famous BT Cellnet C12 mobiles as opposed to the piggy back chip option. I think a few on here got the chip swap method from me but I was originally shown the method by Ian. He was always looking for something new and used to call me every so often to ask if I knew of any new scams. He was easy to get on with and I got on well with him. (">

Edit: Sweeney - Is that really you Ian? Remember the black car you were driving at the time of the Cellnet mobiles. The one the police chased you across Glasgow in. What was the car?
