Hmmm. I like the look of that. I wonder what BT client it uses tho, some sites are picky what client you use.

4 downloads could be annoying - I remember when I used to be grabbing stuff of torrents I would often try and grab a fews copies of the same item to counteract for the downloads that die at 99%.

Exactly, if you use torrents you need something like this to stay on in background for the eons it takes to download, I can grab what I want on on usenet at full bore, if I want it happening in the background I can use my Qnap. I never bother though because it's so quick it does not get in the way.

I'm the oppisite really, I don't see the point in paying [no matter how much] to download when it's free..I only use torrents.. mainly from private trackers, TL etc.. but on occasion I even use TPB.

I usually always max out my speed when going for popular downloads, have no hastle with incomplete/broken files.. having to keep a pc on doesn't really concearn me as I have a dedicated PC for file hosting/downloading/media center use which is on 24/7 anyways and thus speed isn't really an issue because 99.9% of the time I add something in the evening and by the time I'm finished work the next day it'll be there waiting for me..

so that's speed and cost covered.. oh yeah.. security/transparency.. that's the other thing hardcore newsgroup users go on about.. sure torrents can be tracked.. etc etc blah blah.. but at the end of the day it's not hard for authorities to spot a pirate.. 100Gb+ a month.. 10/1 odds on pirate.. simples.

Can't beat nntp for speed and security and 99% of stuff.

I use both & fail to see the stigma tbh. I pay pennies for what I get from Astraweb and zero for what I get from private torrents so it's not about the money.
Thing is, if you want movies/games/apps etc then nntp is the best without a doubt, but if you want TV (like I do) & try and get a kids TV show or a documentary you missed, private torrent sites can't be beaten. All depends on what you're after. Somewhere like Demonoid you can find albums being seeded that you've no chance of finding anywhere else. Thebox's TV capping schedule is hard to beat - the majority of XviD's are up within half an hour. And while *some* TV stuff makes it to newsgroups, not all of it does. Episodes are missing willy nilly. If I want a series I ususally try and grab what I can from NG's, but there's a good chance if something's missing, it'll be on a torrent somewhere. Another good thing is you can usually pick what file you want out of a bunch, so say one track from an album or one avi from a series. With NG's everything's rar'd so you have to have the lot.

For me it's about speed, security and convenience, provided you are on a fast provider with good retention and the files you are downloading has a PAR set it is rarely a problem.

usenet with ssl will blow any torrent site out of the water for speed, retention and pure amount of stuff available, i do use torrents occasionly tho however 99% of my downloads come through usenet, just purchased an 8TB nas server and currently it only supports torrrents (and they work great i might add) but apparently their is some NZB software for it so might have a go at that tonight

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...ef=oss_product

only had it running a few days but already very impressed, setup with raid 5 (or their version callled x-raid which i think allows you to upgrade to larger hard drives over time), found it quite easy to setup and have it running with my xboxs throughout the house and it hasnt skipped a beat

give or take about £500 for the lot

Newsgroups all the way. Anyone that thinks torrents are in anyway, shape or form better are in denial. Torrents were all I knew once and thought they were good, but when I got pointed in the direction of NG's the world became my oyster! Stuff all that uploading crap, incomplete, slow download gash. For 7 odd quid a month with Astra web I can have it all, and in no time!

EG. A DVD-R of 5.02GB will take a mere 42 minutes to get via NG's with a 15mb connection. Even if you could get a torrent that quickly which I doubt you still have to upload it all back if you don't want to end up getting banned off the likes of TL.

I can't wait for Virgin Media's 100mb BB which should be in my area in June some time, I will download the whole planet in 5 minutes lol.

    Both have there place.
There is plenty of stuff available via torrents that you won't find on newsgroups.

Used to get stuff from torrents all the time and you find that private sites make you share back usually 2-1 some more. (or at least they did when I was using them.
If I get full speed up and down I would have to leave my uploading on for 20 times the time it takes me to download.
With newsgroups I get a standard xbox game in about 20 mins.
Tv eps are up within 30 mins of showing on the tv. Merlin for example. It's up shortly after it airs and if I miss it I can just go and download it in a couple of minutes.
The £7 a month I pay easily covers what I get and I couldn't be happier.

    Ha ha, this old chestnut.

I use both and have to say that in terms of content, DECENT (not TPB or any site ending in 'nova'!Or even ones like TL or Demonoid to be honest. )torrent sites will piss over anything Newsgroups can provide.
But (and without sounding too pretentious) it's all about being 'in the know' and getting into the right sites/communities etc. In terms of speed, again, any decent private site will max out any connection you might have without any problems and you definitely DO NOT have to faff about with incomplete files.

Newsgroups are the piss easy option for the layman, which is basically what I am slowly becoming, as time wears away my youth. As I simply can't be arsed to 'keep up with the kids' and/or my upload ratio. You pay a few quid and it's not far off a simple, one click solution and it does the job. MOST of the time.....

When it doesn't, I still have my private trackers to furnish me with the real deal.
