Attention Rolls-Royce to show electric car at Geneva motor show

Rolls-Royce to show electric car at Geneva motor show

By Jorn Madslien Business reporter, BBC News

The new rechargeable Phantom is only at an experimental stage

Luxury car maker Rolls-Royce is to unveil an electric version of its Phantom flagship model at next month's Geneva motor show.
The experimental car will not go into production but the company will use it to gauge customers' opinions.
Chief executive Torsten Muller-Otvos said the firm was "seeking clarity on which alternative technologies may be suitable [in our] cars in the future".
Parent company BMW is exploring a range of hybrid and all-electric solutions.
And Mr Muller-Otvos is keen to explore a wide range of developments.
"I must be convinced that any alternative drive-train we choose for the future delivers an authentic Rolls-Royce experience," he said.
Electric motoring is increasingly becoming mainstream, although cars that combine batteries with petrol or diesel engines in some way are generally seen as more viable for large vehicles.

I wonder if we'll all be driving around in electric cars in 30/40 years, with regular engine cars becoming 'classics'?

I wonder what noise electric cars will be forced to make in order to give a continuous audible sound for pedestrians.

Is anyone else just not interested in the future of electric or hybrid cars?

I'd be quite happy to see VW cars being made with the same 1.9 TDI 130 HP engine they started using nearly 10 years ago - they gave excellent power, economy, and were good on tax and price too but it seems that isn't going to be the case.

Infact, it's the opposite... my current car with a 2.0 TDI 170 has to have a DPF fitted for some regulations nonsense and all I hear about is it causing a headache. I assume these regulations are what is giving the push for this hybrid and electric nonsense.

I work in the industry & out of everyone dipping their toe in the electric vehicle thing the first mainstream one to just go balls out & supply one is tata. Soon lost charge in the cotswolds. The range quoted is deffo ideal world conditions.

Edit - the next big one is SAIC.
