Info back problems, painkillers or alternative

my back seems to be getting worse, had a scan and ive got deterioration of the bottom spine, plus i had an accident a few years ago that did a fair bit of damage to my back and leg.

ive been taking co-codamol or tramadol for the pain but it seems to be getting a lot worse and its like someone crushing my spine together and ripping a barbed wire through it at times.

my q is, has anyone tried the homedics range of back massagers, the ones with heat etc in them and if so are they any good or would i be better getting a massage chair?.

i was taking 2 co-codamols with 1 tramadol when needed but the new doctors a bit of a twat and knocked one off.

    would visiting a chiropractor help?

    any advise appreciated.

My mrs has had back problems and can still be in a lot of pain even after co-codamols, diazapam etc.

The only thing that seemed to help her was an osteopath, after a treatment there she can be much better for weeks sometimes.

I bought my wife the Homedics shiatsu neck massager as she has an ongoing neck problem from falling off a horse a few years back. Bloody marvellous bit of kit. Heats up quickly and massages very firmly.Well worth the money. Can't really comment on the chairs, other than when I did my research they looked the bollocks and the reviews seemed pretty good too.

Have u tried Sumatriptan? (i believe its the right spelling) its like an ultimate paracetamol. I know user sgtbarton knows more about them as he often brings them into work and he swears on them for headache/pain relief. Might b worth looking into. I tried one and went numb....forgot all pain lol

    2 x co-codamol 30/500's and 2 x ibuprofen 600mg's (together)every 4 hours seem to help for the first couple of hours.

Just been prescribed these for cluster headaches 100mg. Not had to try one yet but did'nt know they were good for general pain relief as well.

Back on topic now. Det if you have deterioration in the lower back you need to find out exactly how bad it is, where it is and your options. Pain killers may not work if it is an agrevated nerve and massage may do more damage if not done correctly. You need an MRI and a neurosurgeon to talk you through your options.

I managed to get a prolapsed L4 Disk and I was given anti-inflamatories, painkillers and advised to do gentle excersize at the gym. This was not helping so I got an MRI. When I saw the neurosergeon he was surprised at the advice and medication the GP gave me. He took me off the pain killers and changed the anti-inflamatories to a different type and changed the excercise type and routine and told me it would improve and if it did'nt to go back. Within two months I was able to get a full nights sleep and 4 months after that I was walking without limping.

If however you do want the pain killer I would sugest you go for a Tramadol/Amatriptylene mix 100mg/15mg. That said I'm not a doctor but have "tried different combinations".........

I've had back issues for years now to the point it is a struggle to turn over in bed if I have laid in one position too long.

I have had cortizone injections into my lower back & Sacroiliac joint

I had an MRI a few years ago and the issue seemed to be degenerative disc / discs and an issue with my neck, but with my age at the time they did not want me to have surgery (I will end up having the operation within 5 years)

I use co-codamol 30/500 does not get rid of the pain, but makes it bareable.

From personal experiance I would not use a chiropracter very expensive & as they are all private and not NHS. You will have your first consultation they will bend you a little / manipulate your joints tell you it is fixable, but as it less common issue you need many treatments 2 per week at £30 - £40 a pop.

Personally, a good massage does help. Your lower back will be a mess with tight muscles this is where I find a massage helps to relax said area.

A very hot shower as soon as you get up will loosen you up.

Anti gravity table will open your spine up releaving the pressure on your discs which in turn may have been putting pressure on your spinal cord as they are crushed together.

Try not to sit down too much as gravity pulls you down stopping at the small of your back / bum as you are on a chair. Also with gravity (personal question) are you overweight? as gravity is pulling your weight down and compresing your spine (we are taller in a morning than at night due to our backs compressing and other soft tissue)

My doctor gives me Diclofenac when I get a bad back. It sorts me out but I only take it when its really sore. Worth a try.

@owl, im about 22 stone (lost a stone lately) but also 6,4 so it does balance out well

funny you should mention the antigrav tables as ive been thinking of buying one to see if it helps.

@liveseytowers - diclofenic does absolute bugger all for me, either its my size or just does not work. i find tramadol or co-codamol to be best and make it bearable. might ask for a scan to see what is going on in detail.

I managed to get my MRI booked in really quick. I paid to see a specialist about £90 claimed most of it back, but your appointment will be far quicker than going through the NHS even though your scan will be done on the NHS

    Not right, but thats life...

I would try and use as few drugs for it as possible, my back is screwed and has been for about 15 years, I had injections etc but the bottom of my spine looks like a stack of dodgy books on the mri scan so it's never going to be cured.

Weight will be a lot of your problem (and mine) and light regular exercise should help with the pain, the pain is normally a stabbing pain and muscle locking and the reason for this is it's protecting the back from further damage so taking pain relief etc is just over riding the bodies natural way of protecting the damaged area, I only take it when I really can't move, I am now at the point I know what I can and can't do and avoid doing stupid things 99% of the time so it is manageable.

I had that shit in Germany for my knee years ago, even went upto 800mg.

Had about as much effect as a smartie on any pain and I'm pretty much of the idea that they are placebos.
