Default Replacing 360 DVD Drive & Avoiding Ban

    Evening All

I need to replace the DVD drive in my brother-in-laws Xbox Elite due to 'open tray' error.

The new drive has arrived and I have the Jungle Flasher pdf plus the kit for reading the DVD key.

Before I have a stab at it, I just wondered what the best approach was as I don't want to get his console banned as he lives for xbox live.

Can I use both his old drive and the new drive in another spare xbox for the purposes of reading the drive key and flashing it into the new drive - or am I asking fuckwit questions?

you wont need a new drive just laser mate

swap them over and you'll be fine (lasers that is )

also before you take the supposed knackered laser out make sure it's not just sitting at the top a they can get stuck up their from time to time if it is push it down manually and you'll be good to go

I'll dig the Elite out and have a nosey but they are the same Lite-On drive but I think different firmware versions.

I had a look at the process to swap the laser out and seen as he's glued to the thing and didn't mind paying for a new drive I thought it would be less faff for me and better for him if I just swapped the drive key from one to the other as the new drive is supposed to have had very little use, his old one has been hammered and he doesn't install the games to the HD like a muppet!

to be honest the first thing i would do is tweak the pot of the laser as it's bound to be around 5 ohms bring it down to 3.5 ohms and it'll probably be ok takes about 2 mins at the most

Ok, now I'm going to ask a really fuckwit question...

    The original drive is a Lite-on DG-16D2S-09C

The new drive is a Lite-on DG-16D2S - No - anything like the above

    Is that an issue?

I don't have a multi-meter and he's only 11 so I didn't want to mess around with the Pots through fear of something going wrong and him only being a kid and playing it for hours at a time. Had it been my own I wouldn't have cared but he's only a kid so thought I best try and do the safest fix possible. Thanks for the advice though

    Ok, plot thickens slightly.

    Original Drive
    Make: Phillips & Lite-on
    Model: DG-16D2S-09C
    H/W: A0A2
    F/W: 93450C

    New Drive
    Make: Phillips & Lite-on
    Model: DG-16D2S
    H/W: A0A1
    F/W: 74850C

So slightly different models, h/w and f/w.

I've taken the top off of the original drive and the PCB can be swapped if I desolder the six wires on the PCB. I don't have a soldering iron to hand but I can borrow one off of my mate which is a decent and the same one I used to jtag my 360.

I've not taken the top off of the new drive yet, if it's the wrong one and needs to be like for like in both make, model, h/w and f/w then I'll resell it as the warranty label is still intact.

If it doesn't need to be exactly the same and I'm not going to get his xbox banned in anyway then I'm open to suggestions.

I can confirm you can do a PCB swap between a 7 and 9 series and works with LT+ fine as I have done this on mine.

Make sure you label those wires up before desoldering tho!

Thanks for the info mate, I'll get my mates soldering iron.

One further question, if I'm not flashing the firmware in any way as I want to keep it stock so it can be used on live, is that still ok?

This worked perfectly mate thank you

...that's after I managed to label the yellow wires the wrong way round and solder them on the wrong way round!! Once I'd corrected that then it worked fine and discs now boot up first time every time.

Thanks again for all the advice and suggestions everyone
