Default Disk drive suddenly stopped reading....

I've got a 360 with a liteon flashed with the latest LT firmware. Today, it's suddenly stopped reading most of my copied disks but still works ok with DVD's and Original games. I've swapped it with another Liteon I've got and that's doing the same thing although it does play a few copies too. I would say the laser is on it's way out but it seems odd that it's doing it with both drives. Anyone have any ideas?

    Cheers

Im assuming you mean the latest LT+ firmware, as the latest LT isnt good enough for AP25 games on the latest dashboard.
Sorry to state the obvious, but you never know.

I use Aone disks. Never had a problem before. It's strange because it will read some and not others.

Sounds like a worn laser. Fact is , cheaper media burn your laser out quicker . Thankfully they are cheap and easy to replace.

Sorry just read your post again (sleepy) and u have swapped the drive and it's the same .

Actually it still sounds like worn lasers.

Im going with the media...try some verbs written at 4x. Alternatively, a slight pot tweak.

Cheaper media can work fine, but as Braymond says, it does make the laser have to work harder causing in some cases premature failure. Just try timing the creation of an ISO (ie reading the disk) using an xbox liteon drive, once using a verb and once using cheap media, and see the difference in how long it takes to create.

Thanks.... Just found it strange that both drives stopped working at the same time and they both will read some Aone disks but not others. How difficult is it to swap out a laser?

There is nothing wrong with AONE discs mate if burnt correctly. I have been using them for nearly 2 years now and never had a single bad burn and they have worked on every 360 I have chucked them at. All my mates use them as well and some other DF'ers I know also use them with the same results. The ones we have been using are the ones SCAN do at about £7 for a pack of 25 !

Just cleaned the laser with some IPA. Seems to be ok now. Will get a new laser anyway. Thanks for the replies.

I'm not saying there is anything wrong with aone discs per se - lots of people have success with them. However - it's a fact that cheaper media places more strain on the diode. I've repaired enough devices over the years and have seen the effects on bad discs on the bench when i worked at pioneer.
Another thing I have noticed - some cheap discs I've had (cd and DVD) actually declined over time and wouldn't read properly a couple of years down the line. They were unbranded crap admittedly.

Anyway, is it easy to change out the laser? Anyone got a decent tutorial?

Just buy a new laser ther only about 8 quid, or you could try moving the pot on the old laser
It's the left one for DVD.

It does sound like a prime candidate for a tweak rather than a replacement laser. Google "xbox dvd pot tweak tutorial" or similar. You will need a basic multimeter to do it.
