hey peeps.... hmmmm im going to take my dads pc from him i think.

ok i went to visit today and his pc is running soooooo slow, some programs wont even open anyway i did virus scan and malware scan both came back ok.

i have no idea what processes should and shouldnt be running, but can anyone see anything on this list that really shouldnt be there?

Stuff in there looks pretty standard. AVG, Lexmark printer, Apple drivers, Acrobat Reader, Photoshop and the usual Windows stuff.

But you're not likeley to spot any malware in there. They hide themselves in genuine windows services or give themselves a legit name. If the scanners come back OK then it should be fine.

If he has a rootkit or a bad trojan, these may not pick it up.

Was he using Photoshop at the time you invoked Task Manager? If not, that's suspect for a start, as trojans tend to use names that seem familiar. The reader_sl.exe and E_FATIFIE.exe files are suspects too; what was actually open and running on his PC at the time you did this screengrab?

More info such as OS version being used would help too.

reader_sl.exe is part of Adobe Reader. Runs on all PCs with it installed as standard. Just makes it open slightly faster.

E_FATIFIE.exe is part of a print driver that monitors the ink/toner levels.

looks like you have AVG antivirus running

    AVGIDSagent.exe
    AVGIDSmoniter.exe
    avgemcx.exe
    avgrsx.exe
    agvwdsvc.exe
    avgtray.exe

can say from past experience of having AVG installled it slowed my laptop down to a crawl more or less as you describe as it was eating the memory and constantly updating was taking smething like 5-10 mins just to open firefox but once i uninstalled it and replaced with bitdefender it was running a lot smoother

i usually use spybot search and destroy, this isnt the best but does its job and its a free download, how much ram is installed in the PC and what type cpu does he have eg, 478 pin or 775 pin

The OS looks like Vista? Problem solved! Get rid.

Judging by the Memory usage of the processes, the machine is old - 3ish years? I'm guessing it's chunking along with 512Mb-1GB DDR?
Also, evaluating the amount of things loaded into memory in the Task list (I'm guessing somewhere towards 50 by that list) that is a lot of stuff for an old Vista machine to cope with.

Most 2GB machines run comfortable with 40-60 Processes. Especially with Windows 7.
Upgrade the Ram (to at least 2GB if it's not already) and you will see a vast improvement - eBay (£30ish)

Running Malwarebytes will improve some stuff that is going to be hiding on there as well, killing some unused processes (IE Printer stuff) when it's not required will also help - but its more a quick fix than a solution.

If you DONT want to upgrade the RAM. Install Windows 7 for a better experience.

I installed Windows 7 on a Pentium 4 with 1GB RAM just the other day.
The computer was originally Windows XP and the owner was over the moon with it.

    -EDIT-
BTW, the bottom of the Task Manager is a better indicator (or Performance Tab). It explains the CPU usage (which looks like 0%), and the physical memory usage percentage...?

    thanks for the replies.

yup the IFATIE one is epson manager, i was bothered about that one but i googled and found out what it was.

does bitdefender keep doing pop up stuff ? i did put comodo on for a while but there was so many warnings, for genuine stuff, i took it off and put avg back on.

yup photoshop was open, well it was trying to open i had tried opening it as he had said it wouldnt work, and it didnt actually load but it was in the process list for that reason i guess.

its a self build running winxp, 2gb ram, 2.4ghz athlon and if memory serves me its an nvidia gfx 128mb not sure the exact one though.

In which case, the machine should be running pretty well with those modest specs. I would probably backup and try a reinstall. Perhaps even an excuse to try Windows 7 - try the Slic v2.1 method. I'll assist if need be. (PM me).

My old man was a bit dubious about learning a new Operating System at first, but he has not looked back since.
