Next week’s season-opening Australian Formula One Grand Prix could be the last, according to the sport’s billionaire boss Bernie Ecclestone.
Next year a new Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, will be added, followed by Sochi, Russia, in 2014. However, Ecclestone says the F1 calendar cannot increase beyond 20 races and it has already reached this limit.
“We are probably going to have to drop two races to fit in Austin and Russia,” Ecclestone said, adding: “Australia are saying they don’t want a race.”
The Melbourne race lost $49.2 million (£26.1 million) last year, prompting its mayor to question the value for money. The estimated $36 million Ecclestone charges for the event is believed to be the primary cause of the loss.
“If Australia want to go, they can go and the next one is maybe one of the races in Spain,” said Ecclestone. Since 2008, there have been F1 races in Barcelona and Valencia but Ecclestone said: “We will have to have only one race per country in future.

“We are alternating in Germany so maybe that’s what we will do in Spain.”
Bahrain’s Grand Prix was cancelled due to civil unrest this year and October’s Japanese event could be under threat because of its earthquake.
