was the sytem left in the wifi standby mode for long periods of time? this has been known to cause problems on older machines.

I dont think there is much you can do with wii's, taking it apart and re-applying the thermal paste to the CPU/GPU may help. Does the unit get hot?

If it's getting hot I'd take it apart and make sure there's no fluff inside blocking the air flow. Chances are it's something as simple as that.Where my Wii is there is usually a stack of clothes around it and I find I have to clear it out every few months or it gets REALLY hot - although I've not had it lock up on me yet.

it wasnt leaving the wifi on that caused probs, it was the wii 24 conenction thing that was running when the machine was on standby. Although in that state the wii creates a tiny amount of heat, in some cases it would build up and cause damage to the GPU. I think once this happened the machine would get random problems.

Iv had very few problems with then , usually bend drives when kids have Droped
Them , but i did see one that the gfx chip had lifted , it didn't freeze , just gave no video .
I would pull it down and give it a good clean and take it from there.

You will need a try wing screw driver , and there realy easy to work with once you get there dumb
    Security screws out.

    Plug.
